Pinellas Park is a city located in Pinellas County, Florida. The population was 20,507 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pinellas Park was established in 1868 as a small farming community on the eastern edge of what is now Pinellas County. A post office was opened in 1869, and by 1872, the community had become known as "Pinellas". The name pinellasson applied to all of southern Pinellas County at that time. The town developed around two railroad stations: one near St Petersburg and another just north of Clearwater on U.S. 1. Passenger trains service arrived here beginning in 1892; by 1915, both stations had been abandoned and the town prospered as a commercial center with several stores, three churches (including one founded by Methodist missionaries), a school (grades K-12), and two public works buildings - one for storing watermelons and another used for storage and heating oil until it was destroyed by fire in 1926 - all within walking distance of each other. In 1923, whenpinellassocalled itself "Pinella",one of its first decisions was to abandon its original name which had not caught on with residents or been approved by the United States Postal Service because it sounded too similar to that of nearby St Petersburg. In 1905, Anson Mills developed land near what is now Pinellas Park as part of his efforts to develop new areas east of Tampa Bay. After purchasing some of the same land from local landowners, Mills planned to create a public space for his community that would include recreation and education features as well as commercial uses. The initial plan received mixed reviews from those who lived closest to him – some saw it as an opportunity for development while others believed that it should have been set aside for use by locals only. Ultimately, Mills' desire for a large open space led him to purchase additional land surrounding what is now Pinellas Park from local farmers and developers in 1913. Although Mills never realized his original vision for Pinellas Park - which included several stadiums and other amenities - he did help contribute significantly to its growth over time. In particular, he helped establish several important organizations within the park - such as the Parks Association which served as both marketing and governing body; orthe Central Florida Recreation Commission which oversaw all aspects related to physical recreation within the park; orthe National Recreation Committee which developed policy regarding recreational opportunities within national parks across America). Today, thanks in part to Mills' legacy and work at Pinellas Park over many years - including being involved with numerous vandalism incidents that took place over time - there are multiple attractions available within reach for visitors who want something more than just a visit with nature around them (see list below).
