Pinellas Park is a city located in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 24,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that would become Pinellas Park was first platted in 1892 by John Troup and others as part of the new town of Hillsborough. The name "Pinellas" was taken from an old Seminole Indian word meaning "place where trees grow." On November 25, 1895, the construction of what would become Pinellas Park's first courthouse began on what is now US-1 north of I-395. The building served as the court house until 1907 when it became home to Hillsborough High School. In 1912, a second courthouse was built on land adjacent to present day US 1/3 south of 5th Street which still serves as headquarters for Pinellas Park government today. In 1925, Palm Beach County acquired portions of Hillsborough Township (later renamed Pinellas) through eminent domain and moved its residents into what would become Pinellas Park. At this time there were only a few hundred people living in what is now Pinellas Park proper and most growth came from annexations made by neighboring municipalities including Clearwater and Plant City which saw their populations swell from a few hundred to over 10,000 within just ten years – all while pineapples continued to be grown in tiny plots near downtown St Petersburg! Downtown St Petersburg officially opened its doors to the public on July 2nd 1904 with Mayor Jens Jensen presiding over proceedings Axe signifying “the opening up” or “coming into being” of what would later be called Downtown St Petersburg! Well over one million people have visited Downtown St Petersburg since then making it one of America’s most popular tourist destinations! Pinellas Park, Florida was founded in 1885 by Alexander W. Pine and his wife Anna L. Pine. The town was named after Anna's maiden name of "Pinellas". In 1925, the county of Pasco created a new municipality within the county, Pinellas Park, with its own government and school system. After years of discussion and debate over whether or not to annex Pinellas Park into Pasco County, it was decided in 1959 that an annexation would be unnecessary given the large population shifts within the county since then. In 1984, following a referendum vote by residents in which they voted to add $1 million for park development, Pinellas Park became one of only two municipalities in Pasco County to have its own police department as well as its own fire department. In 2010, following another referendum vote by residents to improve public transportation options within the municipality, Pinellas Park voters passed a resolution authorizing the City Manager to seek state funding for a rapid transit system that would connect their municipality to adjacent Broward County. The city has since began planning and preparing for construction on this project which is expected to begin later this year.
