Plant City is a city in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 36,562 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Spanish colonists in 1795 as Villa de las Brisas (Garden Village), named for the fresh water springs that lay nearby. It became a major citrus producer and shipping center during the early 1800s before becoming a manufacturing center with breweries, foundries and other heavy industry in the late 19th century. Plant City was first settled by Scotch-Irish immigrants in 1837 as part of what would become Tampa Bay area. In 1885, it became an incorporated municipality and was renamed after Jacksonville's Plantation Pointe development on Tampa Bay near Clearwater Beach. The name change reflected Plant City's status as one of America's "largest cotton ports". In 1916, Plant City annexed neighboring Dunedin which had been formed from parts of Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties following passage of statehood legislation which allows municipalities to annex adjacent counties if they have a combined population of 100,000 or more people. This annexation increased Plant City's population size to 134,000 by 1920; however its heyday as an agricultural center had ended by that time due to declines in crop production throughout America during World War II.
