The Marine Corps deployed gift history in Plant City, Florida on December 7th, 1951. The Marines stationed in Plant City were the 4th Marine Regiment. This regiment was originally called the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines. On December 7th, 1951, the battalion changed its name to the 1st Battalion (Majestic), 5th Marines. The 1st Battalion (Majestic) was deployed to Okinawa Japan during World War II and fought in many battles including Iwo Jima and Okinawa Shuri. The battalion later served in Korea where they fought against the North Korean Army. In 1955, the battalion relocated to Fort Polk Louisiana and served as part of Operation Neptune's Spear which aimed to drive North Korea from South Korea. After years of service and deployments throughout the world, on January 15th, 1957 the 1st Battalion (Majestic) disbanded and its members were re-deployed back to America with Headquarters Company becoming Headquarters Battery of Battery E Company 2/5 Marines atoll at Naval Station Mayport Mississippi before being reassigned back to Okinawa Japan on June 12th 1959 for another deployment there during World War II known asOperation White Cloud which lasted until September 1958 when it was cancelled due to warship operations in Asiazon Atoll.
Plant City is a small city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and is the county seat of Polk County. The first settlers arrived in Plant City in 1836. The city was named for David Dixie Carter, a cotton planter and legislator from Georgia who had come to Florida during the Seminole Wars to purchase land for himself and his family. In 1841, Plant City became the county seat of Polk County after it was chosen by commissioners from various counties in centralFlorida over Tampa as a capital city because Tampa was then under construction on what would become Lake Street (now Interstate 4). Plant City began developing as an agricultural center due to its location next to two major rivers: the St Johns River and Jupiter River. By 1870, the town had developed into a large commercial center with over 100 businesses. During World War II, Plant City played host to many military installations such as Fort Walton Beach and Fort Myers Naval Air Station. After the war ended, many businesses went out of business and most of the infrastructure that had been built up during World War II vanished; however, some new businesses such as Restaurants Unlimited opened up in their place. Today's downtown retains much of its early development history with streets named for early pioneers like Samuel Freeman (founder of Freeman's Furniture Store), James Crain (the first African American mayor of Plant City), John Aucher (a lawyer who helped create Polk County) and more recent mayors such as Jeff Atwater (the current Mayor) and Bob Vander Meer. In recent years, PlantCity has seen growth in tourism due to its beautiful scenery and historical sites including Gainesville Historic Districts Preserve which preserves Gainesville's antebellum homes along Gainesville Rd., Downtown which features examples of Art Deco/ Moderne architecture dating back to 1925-1930; Plantation Park Cemetery; Intracoastal Waterway Museum located on Indian Harbour beachfront just north of I-4 exit #1015A; Confederate Soldiers' National Monument near mile marker 231st on US 1 southbound between US 19E & SR 520 eastbound; Everglades National Park adjacent to downtown which offers visitor attractions like "The Floridian" - a replica observationtower offering views across Sarasota Bay.; Daytona International Speedway also located nearby which hosts events like NASCAR races; plus several other smaller tourist attractions happening everyday throughout town without ever taking away from its main attraction - live music!
