Plant City is a small city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Plant City is the county seat of Polk County and the home to the University of South Florida. In 1961, Floridians voted to change the name of their county from Polk to Hillsborough County so that PlantCity would no longer be associated with secessionist activities during World War II In 1984, while still located within city limits, PlantCity became home to South Florida’s first concentration camp for Haitian refugees who were fleeing Caracol Yankee military forces seeking refuge during Operation Neptune’s Spear; however, only two people died inside Camp Aguila-Oso after being transported there from Miami-Dade Counties areas affected by that war effort The current Main Street corridor running northeast – south from I-Drive/SR 377 southeast through downtown plant city towards SR 501 near US-1A ran through town until 1937 when US 1A was extended into neighboring Hillsborough County becoming SR 378 . On November 6th,, 1997 Orange Blossom Trail opened up Memorial Park across SR 378 about 2 miles north of where I-Drive meets US 1A - now part of newly renamed Orlando International Airport
