Plantation was a small town in central Florida that was the center of slave trade and plantation life. The name means "a farmstead set on a piece of land." The first white settlers in Plantation were African Americans who worked on the farmsteads of their white owners. By 1825, the number of slaves had increased to more than 1,000. The slave trade began in Cuba in 1793 and by 1830, almost all of Africa was under British rule. Britain wanted to control the resources that could be used for munitions and shipsbuilding, so it Chips (slave traders) transported Africans to plantations in North America where they were worked off-shore until they became free laborers. Some slaves were sold directly to American colonists or to Spanish missions; others were traded as part of a mixture of people known as the Inter Colonial Exchange. In 1821, President James K. Polk declared war on Mexico because he felt that Mexico was unifying with France and trying to gain access to our natural resources while supplies remained available from England. In order not let Spain get an advantage over us, we banned slavery within U.S.-controlled territory after Mexico's victory at Buena Vista Creek in 1846 This led many planters into emancipation during this time as well since it would mean losing their slaves without any prospect for them returning home should they ever need them again After the Civil War ended in 1865, most plantations closed down due largely to economic reasons such as disease (the cotton crop died due to pests), lack of labor, or Congressional legislation abolishing slavery

Plantation was a large, isolated community in central Florida that functioned as a plantation economy. The area now known as Plantation was first populated by the Timucua and Aisne Native Americans, who were forced to move from their traditional hunting and gathering ways after the arrival of European explorers in the 15th century. The land around present-day Plantation was purchased by Englishman Francis Nicholson in 1763, and became part of British North America. Nicholson set up a small town on the land, which he named Fort Nicholson after his victory over French forces at the Battle of Fort Duquesne near Philadelphia in 1763. In 1821, Plantation was granted to Colonel James Wilkinson by Governor Manuel López de Santa Anna for $10,000. Wilkinson later renamed it Jacksonville for Jaxon Creek flowing through its center. The community grew rapidly due to slave trade and cotton production, and soon reached its peak during the antebellum period. However, following the American Civil War, Plantation began to decline as sugar plantations became more popular in Florida. It continued to decline until it was demolished in 1957 for development purposes.
The Plantation period in Florida began with the purchase of a tract of land by the Spanish in 1565. The area that became Florida was originally part of Mexico, and the Spanish were not interested in moving settlers to what is now Florida because they thought it would be too harsh. After years of trying, in 1567, Spain finally obtained permission from the Mexican government to establish a colony in Florida. named Santa Clara de Tenerife, this new colony included about 100 people and lasted for only two years before being abandoned due to lack of food and water. In 1655, Englishman Philips Spindler discovered a group of Native Americans living on the east coast of present-day Florida. The Indians called this area "Plantation." After some initial skirmishes between the English and Indian groups, Spindler decided to make himself an owner/landowner on this location. He named his property "Spindler's plantation" after himself. This plantation grew over time into one of the largest sugar plantations in South America. By 1700, man had moved into Seminole territory south of Tampa Bay and began cultivating sugar cane as their primary crop. In 1763, following Britain's Invasion of Cuba, American forces landed at Port Royal on Charlotte Harbor seeking refuge from British forces then occupying Havana. When they found out that Cuba was still under Spanish control they capitulated without any fighting and withdrew their forces to Fort George which they renamed Fort Presque Isle after General James Wilkinson who had commanded them during their withdrawal from Havana. From here they started construction on Fortifications William Bradford (1764) and John Taylor (1768). These forts served as supply depots for General Andrew Jackson's army during the 1812 Battle at Horseshoe Bend which resulted in victory for United States Over Spain
