In the early 1800s, Plantation was a vast and sprawling Spanish land grant in what is now Florida. The plantation system was established in this area, with wealthy English and French landowners acquiring large numbers of acres of sugar cane, tobacco, and other crops. In the 17th century, the British occupied Florida; after their departure in 1813, Spain took over most of the territory. The first Africans brought to Plantation were captured by pirates in Africa and brought to America as slaves. By 1830, there were more than 1,000 black people living on Plantation; many worked as tenant farmers or servants. The importance of sugarcane production led to an increase in population on Plantation during the 19th century. With more people coming to live there, plantations became increasingly specialized—for example, one group developed a huge industry of cotton ginning to processed raw cotton for export. By 1840, Planters had acquired some 12 million acres (5 million hectares) of land in all parts of Florida; it would be owned by them until emancipation in 1865. Although many planters were successful entrepreneurs who built prosperous plantations through hard work and innovation (including Thomas Jefferson), some also resorted to force or bribery to get their hands on wealth they could not produce themselves. The Coast Guard's mission is to protect the nation's seas and skies, support maritime safety, and promote coastal tourism. In addition to their regulation of the oceans and airspace, the Coast Guard also provides search and rescue services in case of accidents or emergencies on our coasts. In 1861, when America was founded, there were no coast guard forces. The first coast guard units were constituted as part of the navy under President Jefferson Davis. On July 1, 1915, Congress created the Department of Homeland Security which included both the Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies within it. After 9/11/2001 terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington D C, Congress passed two acts called "the Patriot Act" which expanded federal power to infringe on civil liberties and individual privacy rights in order to bolster defense against terrorism. Since then there have been many changes made to the Coast Guard including: - The creation of a National Command Authority (NCA) in 2006 which gives greater authority to commanders stationed ashore who can issue orders directly without being relayed through higher command - A new training program for officers called Coastal Defense Training Battalion (CDTB) - Expansion into international waters with Operation Neptune's Spear (2011) where they assisted United States Marines in search for suspected militants off Australia's Great Barrier Reef

Plantation is a term meaning an agricultural or plantation community in the Florida Keys. It was first used to describe the key barrier island of Key West, which was part of Spanish Florida and then British America. The term was also used for the larger islands in the chain, including Miami and Tampa. The oldest known plantations were founded by English colonists in 1565. By 1768, there were over 200 plantations in the area with a population of around 10,000. The development of sugarcane plantations began to take off in the early 1800s and by 1845, there were more than 2,500 sugar plantations operating in what is now southern Florida. Many slaves were brought from Africa for this purpose. The slave trade ended following American independence but continued until after World War II when all slave-owning families were abolished. As a result of this history, plantation life has left its mark on SouthernFlorida culture and society today.
