Plantation was a land grant given by the United States to the Seminole Tribe of Florida in 1835. The tract included 1,500 acres (0.50 km2) of land east of Fort Brooke on the St. Johns River. The grant was made to provide for the education and social welfare of the tribe's "children." The plantation system gradually replaced slavery in Florida during the antebellum period as white families interested in growing sugar cane or cotton bought up tracts of plantations from Native American owners. A number of African Americans worked on plantations until emancipation in 1865. In 1840, Plantation Superintendent James Pritchett estimated that more than 2,000 free blacks lived on plantations and many more tenant- farmers were employed by their landlords. In 1860, only about 10 percent of slaves were working on large estates; most were employed on small family farms with between 20 and 50 slaves. By 1870, however, almost 60 percent of slaveholders had increased their holdings to over one hundred slaves. While some plantation owners tried to improve living conditions for their slaves through such activities as crop rotation, providing them with food and clothing, and giving them access to education and medical care, most enslaved Africans remaining behind suffered extreme poverty and little opportunity for self-realization or advancement beyond a subsistence level life within an oppressive environment. Slavery was abolished in Florida after Reconstruction in 1865 when white women took over management of plantations while African men continued working as laborers without rights or benefits.

The Plantation Period in Florida began with the arrival of Spanish settlers in 1665 and lasted until 1800. The area that is now known as Florida was first explored by Portuguese explorers in 1513 and Spanish colonists arrived in 1565. The area became a part of Spain after the Treaty of Paris ended the war between Spain and Portugal. In 1763, Georgia, which was then part of Spain, gained independence from Spain and formed its own country. This caused a big change for Florida because it became a part of Georgia instead of Spain. From 1763 to 1800, there were many different types of people living inFlorida. There were English, French, Germans, Spaniards, Native Americans (Makah), slaves ( Africans), and Irishmen among these groups. Some famous plantation owners during this time include James Oglethorpe who founded Oglethorpe University in 1807, Pierre-Simon LaFontaine who bought land around Pensacola Bay in 1794, George Washington who owned land near Stonington Springs from 1700 to 1799, and John Taylor who purchased land at Fort Walton Beach from Captain Jack Sparrows on December 3rd ,1795. During the Plantation Period there were many cultural changes that took place within the African American community. For example, when white men came to live on plantations they brought their own food sources as well as their own language which changed the way African Americans spoke about food and cooking techniques. They also introduced new methods such as planting cotton trees which gave rise to an industry called ginning cotton which made money for plantation owners. Another important change during this time period was slave trade because slaves began moving away from Africa to be worked on plantations across America starting around 1650s. By 1800 most slaves had been freed but some continued working on plantations until they died or left North America behind permanently.

The Plantation was a large, rural area in central Florida that was the home of many white families from early colonial times up until the late 19th century. The area now includes parts of Miami-Dade and Broward counties. The name "Plantation" comes from the Spanish word for "a plantation."
