Plantation is a small, isolated community located in the panhandle of Florida. The community was founded by African American slaves in the early 1800s and has since become an important part of Seminole culture. Plantation is currently home to over 100 residents and offers a unique perspective on southern black life. The story of Plantation begins with African Americans who were forcibly taken from their families and sold into slavery in Georgia. After several years, these men were able to escape and find refuge in South Carolina. There, they began to build their own small farmstead with 25 slaves. Over time, the number of slaves at Plantation increased as more Africans were brought over from Africa. In 1828, the first white family arrived in Plantation – John Fenton and his wife Sarah. Mr. Fenton quickly became one of the leaders of the community and helped to create a strong slave society within Plantation. He also began to play an important role in politics within the colony. Over time, Mrs. Fenton also developed her own business within Plantation – running a grocery store for her slaves and other tenants alike. She was also very influential within the black community and played an important role in helping improve race relations within Florida at this time period. In addition, MrsFenton continued to provide support for her enslaved workers until her death in 1859 at age 80 years old. This woman represented many aspects of plantation life: she was intelligent, powerful, supportive, and pious; all qualities that continue to be valuable today within Seminole culture! In 1903, Mr Fenton's son-in-law John Loyd built another house on what is now known as "Loyd Place." This house served as both Mr Fenton's residence as well as a center for social activities throughout much of Seminole history – including dances & balls given by MrsFenton herself! Lloyd Place remained active until it was destroyed by fire in 1978; however portions of it still remain standing today! It is interesting to note that even after Lloyd Place ceased being used for social purposes (and likely lost most if not all its contents), it continued functioning as a storage building for local farmers until it was destroyed again by fire circa 1990! During these times there wasn't really anything else available nearby so this building likely served multiple purposes over many years! Today you can still see evidence inside include furnishings & tools used during farming operations back then! It's truly amazing how such an iconic structure managed to survive through so many different challenges!!!

Plantation was a large plantation in the early days of Florida. It was built by the Swain family on a tract of land between Lake Wales and Immokalee. They started the plantation in 1763 and it continued to be run by them until 1834. The first white person to come to Florida was Captain John Smith, who landed on Santa Teresa Island in 1539. He named the island Santa Teresa because he thought it might resemble England's Isle of Wight. In 1665, Englishman James Overton arrived at Plantation and began working on the plantation. In 1692, Spanish captain Diego de Soto came to Florida and discovered what later became Jacksonville Landing. He called it Ybor City after his hometown of Yorba Linda, California. By this time, over three hundred people had settled at Plantation and most of them were Native Americans from southcentral America who worked as slaves for their British masters. In 1763, George Washington sent an expedition upriver to find a new route for Spain's trade with South America through Cuba; they found no opportunity for this so they returned home in 1764 but left behind a smallpox pandemic that had killed many Spaniards in South America. This caused great concern among British officials because they saw this as another way Spanish slavery could spread into North America if left unchecked In 1765, Samuel Johnson bought 1/5th interest in one of Plantation’s largest estates for £6000 which allowed him more direct control over its management The late eighteenth century saw some real growth on the plantations due to increasing demand from Europe for sugarcane products In 1800-1801 Governor Manuel Félix de la Vega tried unsuccessfully to get possession of Immokalee Island from Spain because he felt that Greater Havana should have been granted autonomy as part of Seminole Nation territory Spanish traders first visited Florida in 1492 when Christopher Columbus sailed past Cape Canaveral on his flagship Santa Maria La Nova while exploring southwestFlorida After nationhood was granted by Congress under President James Kiefer several Indian chiefs ceded their lands east of Tampa Bay to create land northward including what is now Pinellas County After almost 300 years living within Indian Territory (now Lee County), many Seminoles decided not want their ancestral lands east of Tampa Bay or near Clearwater River given all that has happened since independence including major military campaigns against Mexico attempts at forcible annexation etc Many Indians also sold holdings west side bayou such as St Petersburg and Clearwater

Fenton began to develop the land into a plantations which would provide food for his family and help support his cotton production. By 1865, Plantation had become one of the largest plantations in Florida.
