When Plantation first came to be in the area that is now Miami, it was a small farming community. The land was purchased by Juan Fernandez and his brother, Pedro, in 1565 from the cacique of Biscayne Bay. soon after they moved their families to this new land and begun cultivating crops. The first Englishman to visit Plantation was Captain John Smith in 1614. He took with him three Indian slaves as part of his tour of Florida. One slave, James Cook, became one of the most famous explorers in British history and is considered the “Father of Exploration”. In 1795, Governor Carlos de la Vega granted permission for white men to live on Plantation for purposes such as trade and agriculture. By 1800 there were about 120 white people living on Plantation including six women who ran a boarding house for passengers coming down the coast from Havana or Santo Domingo (now Dominican Republic). In 1812 Colonel Christopher Gadsden acquired 2,000 acres within Planteation limits which he used for sugar cane plantations until 1830 when he sold them back to Miguel de la Madrid y Costilla y Hermosillo who died without heirs in 1834. After years of research & discussion amongst growers (& elected officials), condemnation was finally given w/o any opposition from homeowners – paving way for today’s thriving community!
