Military gifts have been a part of the Plantation community for many years. Captain Dillard donated his rifle to the Plantation community in 1813. The rifle was used by both officers and enlisted men for target practice and hunting purposes. In 1814, Major James Witherspoon gifted a cannon to the Plantation community as a token of appreciation for their support during the Mexican-American War. The cannon was cannons that were captured from Mexico during that war. The cannon was used by members of Company K, Second Regiment, Florida Infantry on an arms parade in honor of Major Witherspoon in 1840. The next Military gift to arrive on Plantation was a sword from Lieutenant Colonel George Moseley. Moseley had served with Company C, Third Regiment (Florida Volunteer Militia), United States Volunteers during the Seminole Wars and Indian Wars. Lieutenant Colonel Moseley donated his sword to the Plantation community in 1841. The sword was used by both officers and enlisted men for combat training purposes as well as ceremonial events such as musterments and christenings. In 1847, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt gave away two cannons to each household in order to commemorate Commodore Vanderbilt’s visit to Plantations in December 1846- January1847 . These cannons were used for target practice by members of Company F (Lafayette County volunteers) at Fort Brooke on Tampa Bay Bridge when Commodore Vanderbilt visited that area . The Plantation family of businesses in Plantation, Florida were founded byCaptain James H. Plant in 1821. The Captain and his wife, Lady Anna Plant, ran a general store, woolen mill, blacksmith shop and carriage dealership before their death in 1865. Their children continued the business until 1912 when it passed to their grandson Sam C. Plant. In 1941 the business was taken over by the United States Army and became Fort Riley Military Reservation. It reverted back to the Plantation family after World War II. Plantation was a large, sugar plantation in east Florida that operated from the 17th century until 1815. The name "plantation" comes from the Arabic word القناة, meaning "a field of corn", and indicates that the land was first cultivated by slaves. By the late 18th century, plantations had become a major source of income for many people in East Florida. The first white person to set foot on what is now Plantation Island in West Florida was Englishman John Hawkins in 1613. After his ship lost its way off the coast of Cuba, Hawkins explored much of what is now Florida for treasure seekers and possible landing sites for Spanish colonists. In 1614, he discovered and named Key Largo after his friend and fellow Englishman Nicholas Lulworth. After several years of exploration, Hawkins became aware of potential settlements along the Gulf Coast; he sent two ships to explore this area in 1616 and 2016. On one trip, they found an island which they named Fort Lauderdale because it looked like a fortuitous landfall while sailing around Cape Canaveral peninsula on their next voyage. This led to new development as other European ships began exploring Florida's open waters seeking new sources of income or passage to India or China via the Strait of Gibraltar (now known as the Suez Canal). In 1618, Governor Manuel de Porto established Fort Santa Elena on present-day Jacksonville Beach after encountering an American vessel near Jupiter Inlet during his third expedition into EastFlorida following discovery by Giovanni da Verrazano in 1492 AGO ().
