The Plantation area of Florida was first settled by the Kissimmee tribe in the early 1800s. The region became a part of the United States after the Treaty of Paris in 1813, and remained so until well into the 20th century. The Plantation area was home to a number of large plantations including those run by Florida Governor George W. Broward and his brother, Colonel James A. Broward. During Seminole Wars, white men from Georgia used plantation areas in south-central Florida as bases from which to launch raids on Native American villages. In 1842, General Andrew Jackson ordered General Nathanael Greene to march on Jacksonville and retake what had been captured by Lieutenant Colonel John C. Brevard two years earlier during the Battle of Putnam Creek Bridge. When Green reached Jacksonville he found that Brevard’s force consisted only of about 50 men under command of Major James McMurtry – not even enough to mount an effective resistance against Jackson’s army numbering over 100 thousand soldiers. Aftermath of this battle led to increased violence between whites and Seminoles throughout southern Florida; it is thought that up to 10 000 Native Americans were killed or driven out of their homes during this period. In 1851, Jepson bought 1,000 acres (400 hectares) along with other acreage near Fort Pierce for $5 per acre from Captain Thomas Bloodgood Sr., who had lost his land during Indian Removal Act operations many years earlier. Jepson soon began building a estate called Brown's Land at Plantation on Miami River – one of several such estates built in south-central Florida during this period). By 1860, Brown's Land had become one ofFlorida's largest plantations with more than 300 employees working on its fields and gardens as well as 400 slaves working in some capacity on its seven miles (11 km) long main thoroughfare called "The Avenue." Brown was succeeded by his son Nathaniel Pritchard Brown Jr., who took over management when his father died in 1865 aged 80 years old – an event that has been commemorated annually since then by hosting a solemn commemoration service at Plantation featuring remarks from local dignitaries about tribute paid to him both historically and presently by descendants of those worked thereprior to death date). The plantation grew to encompass over 1,000 acres and employed over 100 slaves. It burned down in 1821 but was rebuilt and continued to be run until the early 1800s.
