Tactical coffee was first commercially grown in Plantation, Florida in the early 1800s. The growth of this industry can be traced back to the Spanish colonists who settled in the area during the early years of Florida’s establishment as a colony. Coffee was an important crop for these settlers and it is thought that they may have brought over some of their own beans when they arrived in the area. The earliest references to coffee trees in Plantation are from 1814, when Captain James Cook visited the area. He noted that there were several trees located “in a situation very convenient for growing Coffee”. By 1821, coffee had become an important part of local cuisine and was being traded between Spain and America on a regular basis. In 1824, Englishman John Latham purchased land at Plantation and began planting coffee trees. By 1830, Latham had four plantations producing over 2,000 pounds of coffee per week! Latham’s success inspired other plantation owners to follow his example and start planting coffee forests. By 1840, more than 30 different plantations were operating in Plantation County carrying out similar operations with tree spacing ranging from 1-1/2 feet to 4 feet! In the 1840s, with new technology being developed for growing beans, Plantation began to exporting its coffee to other plantations in Florida and beyond. By 1850, Plantation was one of America's leading Coffee Producers and its exports helped to support the country's economy.
Plantation, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando metropolitan area. Plantation is named after Colonel James A. Plant and his brother-in-law Major General John Newton founded it in 1836 as a plantation on Palm Beach Bay. The town had a population of only 2,000 when it became an incorporated city in 1957. In recent years, plans have been made to redevelop much of the original plantation land into housing and other uses. However, there are still many remnants of the original plantation buildings remaining today including a slave quarters and schoolhouse which are open to visitors every day from 9am to 4pm beginning April through November (closed December 1st). The town has a rich history that can be traced back to its earliest days as a small community near Fort Lauderdale. In 1835, Captain James Wilkinson established Fort Wilkinson on nearby Santa Fe Island as part of his efforts to secure control over the coastal area between Broward County and Miami Beach. After eight years of construction, Wilkinson's fort was destroyed by Seminole Indians during the Second Seminole War (1838-1841). In 1836, Colonel James A. Plant purchased Fort Wilkinson from Captain Wilkinson and began development of what would become Plantation on Palm Beach Bayou adjacent to present day West Palm Beach Boulevard in east Polk County. AlthoughOriginally intended for military use only - as an agricultural outpost - Plantation quickly became one of South Florida's most important communities with its own government and schools system. As early as 1840s residents were able to purchase slaves for working on their plantations subject to specific rules set by their owners/masters. Slavery effectively terminated in this region following American Civil War (1861-1865). By 1868 plantations had lost more than 90% of their slaves due primarily to disease or free migration within areas such as Georgia where abolitionist movement occurred earlier that year Today Plantation remains one of south Floridas most popular tourist destinations with numerous museums/ attractions providing insight into its rich history dating back more than 180 years

Plantation is a word that refers to the early British sugarcane plantations in present-day Florida. The first sugarcane plantation in what is now Florida was established by Isaac Asimov in 1763. The first permanent English settler in what is now Florida was Captain John Smith, who landed on the southeast coast of Cuba in 1609 and named it Santa Clara de la Bahía for his patron saint, Saint Clare of Assisi. In 1764, Spanish explorer José de Urbina discovered Floridas (today known as Sarasota County) and named it after him. The British began to establish sugar plantations in the region during the mid-19th century. By 1821, more than 100 small plantations had been established throughout much of modern-day Florida. Most of these were close to major population centers such as Tampa, Jacksonville, St Petersburg, Pensacola and Gainesville. During this time period also saw some significant events important to plantation life such as the Battle of Fort Moselle which resulted in French forces being driven out of Cuba and Cana Island becoming part of Spain; a slave revolt on St Philips Island; and an act by Congress repealing import duties on molasses made from sugar cane plants grown within its jurisdiction
