The theme park that now occupies most of Pompano Beach started out as a small fishing village called Dune Bay which opened in 1905. It was developed by two brothers named Harry and Charles Deering who owned several businesses including a store at Dock Road and Atlantic Boulevard. When they died young in 1925 their wives took control of the business and enlarged it into what is now known as Dolphin World amusement park which opened tothe public in 1933. The Deering brothers were also responsible for developing much of Boca Raton beachfront property east of Boca Raton Boulevard between Deerfield Avenue and Indian Key Boulevard during this time period including Hacienda Key Resort (now part of Trump National Golf Club), Palm Island Resort & Marina, Princess Key Resort & Marina, SouthKey Marina&Restaurant &Civic Center, Blue Lagoon Casino & Theme Park - all still active today under different names

Pompano Beach is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, on the southern coast of the state. The name "Pompano" comes from Spanish meaning "beautiful beach." The town was first settled in 1855 by Confederate troops who were retreating from Fort Donelson after they were defeated by Union forces. After the war, many of these soldiers returned to Pompano Beach and began to build homes. In 1872, a post office was established in Pompano Beach and it remained in operation until 1959. The first store in Pompano Beach opened its doors at 815 N. Government Street. The population of Pompano Beach grew rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s due to the influx of veterans returning from World War I and World War II. During this time, many businesses such as a movie theater, restaurant, bank and cotton gin were open along Government Street. In 1951, Pompano Beach received its municipal charter which granted it full city status. In 1964, Hurricane Andrew struck Florida killing over 60 people and causing major damage to coastal towns across the state. As a result of this hurricane, many business owners closed their doors for much of winter alterations focusing on rebuilding rather than marketing their properties elsewhere within days or weeks following landfalling.[1] In 2007, Pompanos Boulevard was renamed State Road 783 for former UF political scientist Congressman (and incoming Miami Mayor) Carlos Lopez de Canseco in recognition of his support for road improvements along that stretch throughout south Dade County including Pompano Beach.[2][3]
