Pompano Beach is a small town in Broward County, Florida. It is located on the South Fork of the Miami River and has a population of about 60,000 people. The town was founded in 1917 by Captain John Pompano and his wife, Lillie. The name comes from Italian meaning "prominence." The Pompanos are one of the oldest families in Broward County. They started out as fur traders in pre-colonial Cuba. When Florida was admitted to the United States, Captains John Pompano and Thomas Moultrie took over their businesses and moved to Fort Lauderdale. Afterward, they became involved with real estate development in North Broward County. In 1916, Captain Pompano married Lillie Caldwell who had also come from North Broward County. They resided at 4166 SSE Sunrise Boulevard until their death in 1978. Today, their daughter Becky Pompano continues the family tradition of running their business together (Caldwell & Company). Pompano Beach's rich history can be found throughout its many buildings and monuments that date back to 1917 when Captain John Pompano first settled there with his wife Lillie Caldwells help! Pompano Beach is a town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Dade metropolitan area. Pompano Beach is bordered to the north by Boca Raton and to the east by Fort Lauderdale. The first Europeans to visit Pompano Beach were Spanish traders in 1521 who named it "Cape May" after Cape May Island in New Jersey. A wharf was built on Islet Key by Captain John Smith during his 1607 voyage from Jamestown to Cuba, and he called it "Pompeo" because of its resemblance to a type of Portuguese galleon that had just been landed there from Lisbon. In 1872, two years before Fort Lauderdale became a city, Wigglesworth established Pompano Beach as an agricultural community with 9 white houses and 4 black families. One Hundred Years of Progress: A History of Palm Beach County (1912), written by Jno H. Reischauer, said that early settlers were "of German extraction." Today's inhabitants are mainly American Indian (Muskies) and Cuban-American retirees who came here during both World Wars for military training or health care opportunities unavailable in their home countries.
