Pompano Beach, Florida is a small town in the county of Broward,Florida. The population was 8,714 at the 2010 census. It is located on the shore of Biscayne Bay and withinarshore of Miami Beach. One of the earliest residents of Pompano Beach was Capt. John A. Cogan who settled there in 1855 with his family. Captain Cogan had been born in County Cork, Ireland and arrived in America on board the brigantine "Mary" on May 10th, 1855. He was among the first Europeans to settle in Key Biscayne where he built a house on land that later became Pompano Beach Boulevard and he died here on November 25th, 1907 aged 83 years old. His son Capt..John A., Jr., also a captain in the United States Navy who served during World War II (1940-1945) lived here until his death December 5th, 1975 age 88 years old). The present day Pompano Beach began as an unincorporated seaside community named Okeechobee which consisted mainly of fishermen from South Florida's shallow waters fishing for lobster and other shellfish during springtime when these waters were still covered with ice (the ice having melted during summer). In 1895 Captain Fenton bought 100 acres adjacent to what are now North Shore Drive and Front Street from Jens Eriksen for $5 per acre; this purchase created much excitement as it represented one of Flagler County's largest land purchases ever made at that time! In 1898 local attorney Julius Sperber purchased 1/3 interest in Okeechobee from Captains Fenton and Cogan; this investment allowed him to build himself a barrier reef fortification called “Sperber” which can be seen today alongshore at mile marker 3A on US-1A just south of mile markers 4 & 5 along Pensacola Bayou (nearby Fort Lauderdale Airport). This fortification included 12 guns plus two howitzers – making it one of the first fortified areas east of Mexico City! As development continued to occur throughout southern Miami-Dade County over time many new homes were built including: The “Pineapple Express” house builder Harry Dorman living at 9001 NW 16th Ave.; Dr Pepper Bottling Co.'s bottling plant being erected by local fruit growers near SW 6TH St.; Frosty Woods Golf Course becoming operational near SW 10TH St.; Hooters steakhouse opening its doors next door to The Players Club restaurant being operated by then CEO Carl Reiner; etc.). By 1955 there were over 400 residences situated along present day Biscayne Boulevard between Northwest 14th Street & Northwest 15th Street while Palm Beaches Parkway extended northeastward beyond today's boundaries into Davie Towne Centre area today known as Weston Park! On July 1st 1957 Flagler County commissioners approved plans for building an expressway through Pompano Beach Township connecting Broward County with Miami-Dade County via I-95W just east of US-1A intersection mainline traffic stopped long enough for motorists exiting I-95W vehicles to cross Seven Mile River Bridge before starting their return journey westbound under I-95W bridge onto Palmetto Road leading back northbound again onto US 1A concurrent with all other mainline traffic…the so called Sunrise Toll Highway!!! Today Sunrise Highway runs concurrently with I–95W about 2 miles east OF Palmetto Rd crossing just past NE 6TH St./SE 7TH St.–just past Coral Gables High School/Stuart International Airport!! At its completion construction Eisenhower Ave./N 19Th St./NW 20Th St.(nowadays Nimesh Rd.) formed its eastern boundary!!! After approximately 35 years variable grades (mostly surface) Mail Coach Lines passenger trains running daily between Fort Lauderdale Terminal railway station southbound via State Road 11 West Naples amd coming ashore at Ft Myers Terminal Railway Station northbound ran past Nimesh Rd thence terminating at Ft Myers Terminal Railway Station opposite Spanish Flats Naval Base!!!!! As late as 1978 mail coach service stoped only 2 ½ miles short side Plaquemines Parish line!!!!!! Although various buses providingcflt service continue nowadays but generally speaking coach operation has been discontinued several decades ago most likely due primarily to high costs associated with maintaining such large infrastructure however occasional scenicrailroad trips still provide unique experiences not possible by automobile !!
