There were only 8 residents when Captain Dyer and his family arrived from South Carolina to start a new life on Biscayne Bay in what is now Pompano Beach. The first post office opened in 1893 and was called "New Port Richey". In 1903, Pompano Beach became an incorporated town with a population of 136 people. In 1916, the United States Coast Guard built its first station at Pompano Beaches after establishment of US Naval Station Fort Lauderdale as part of World War I effort to protect American shipping lanes in that region during wartime times. Since then, there have been many changes to Pompano Beaches – most notably during Hurricane Andrew which caused extensive damage in 1992 and again in 2005 which left over $100 million worth of damages done to property throughout the community . Today’s civic buildings stand as testament to those who have come before: Captain John A. Dyer House (1892), Mrs Ollie Cook Annex (1914), Women’s Club Building (1916), Masonic Lodge No 1 (1920) and First Baptist Church (1928). The current plaza downtown has been developed since 2007 as part of Mayor Carlos Gimenez's vision for revitalization around all aspects of life within the city limits . The history behind this tiny town can be traced back more than 100 years ago when Captains John A Dunnigan and James Fenton established their plantation near what is now known as "New Port Richey", south west of Miami today's Pompano Beach - both men had left Carolina for fresh starts looking for land on Biscayne Bay instead of staying put because they feared Spanish forces might take them captive or drive them out completely given their valuable salt flats coastline & cattle ranching patrimony
