After that, it moved to Fort Snelling and then to Fort Myers. In 1903, the US Army transferred Battery 1 from Ft Myers to Port Orange. It was renumbered as battery number 2 and served here until 1918. In 1942, the US Army transferred Battery 3 from Ft Myers to Port Orange. It was renumbered as battery number 4 and served here until 1945. In 1951, Battery 5 was transferred from Ft Myers to Port Orange and it also served here until 1955. In 1959, Battery 6 became batteries 8-10 atPortOrlando Garrison National Guard Armory. They were also assigned hereto Fort Pierce National Guard Armory where they continue serving today as batteries 11-13 (Battery #14 is currently inactive). Port Orange, Florida is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-St Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Port Orange was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Collier County. A post office called "Orange" was established in 1837, and remained in operation until 1909. In 1881, the towns of Winter Haven and Lakeland were merged to form Port Ormonde; this name reverted to its original spelling in 1907 whenWinter Haven became a city again. Growth of citrus production began in earnest in the early 1900s thanks to new irrigation systems and other technological advances from Citrus Research & Development Company president Waddell Longacre Sr.. By 1925, citrus farmers had increased acreage from 4% to 30%. However, during World War II much of the citrus industry was destroyed or converted into military use due to wartime shortages of materials such as sugar and labor. After the war ended, orange farming resumed but with smaller acreage because there were no restrictions on fruit production that had been placed on beer brewing after Pearl Harbor. In 1959 Port Ormonde voters passed a resolution calling for annexation by neighboring Sanford; however this idea never materialized because Sanford wanted its own city hall and police department instead. In 1966 an act annexing all unincorporated areas within Polk County into Sanford resulted in what is today known as “the port orange merger” which included most of what is now Port Orange proper as well as Winter Haven (renamed Canaveral), Lakeland (renamed Jupiter), Belleair (renamed North Palm Beach), Dunnellon (renamed Fort Myers) and many others unincorporated communities within Polk County east of Interstate 95/Upper State Road 509/State Road 455/Upper Donkonion River Valley Roads between Jacksonville Beach and St Cloud Park without giving any consideration to whether they desired annexation or not; this act has been criticized for violating state law which requires local governments be consulted before taking action regarding annexation proposals. After years of discussion by both cities and county officials over annexing unincorporated areas within their respective boundaries into Sanford through various means including referendum voting or legislation it was decided that a plan should be put together whereby all citizens would be offered an opportunity to vote on whether they wanted their community annexed into Sanford or not; this initiative known as “the port orange merger survey” was designed primarily so that citizens could have an accurate understanding of how much support they had among themselves for annexing their community into Sanford vs leaving it alone – results showed clearly that majority of residents did want their community annexed into Sanford even though some residents claimed they did not receive information about the survey prior to its release. This process finally led to the incorporation of Port Orange into Polk County on December 5th 1977 under then Chief Executive Officer Rickie Jenkins who served until his death on January 10th 2000 . Rickie Jenkins was also responsible for creating what is currently known as “Rickie Jenkins Boulevard” which runs parallel along I-95 near Exit 339A southbound between St Cloud Park Blvd./Lake Wales Rd./SR 719 northbound where it meets SR 185 outside Of Oviedo
