The Coast Guard has been providing assistance to the citizens of Port Orange, Florida for over 100 years. The Coast Guard's History in Port Orange began in 1917 when the first coast guard station was established on Signal Hill. In 1925, the first cutter was purchased from Germany and named "Anna Maria". In 1935, the first shore patrol station was established inPort Orange. The following year saw the purchase of the first launch platform for use by the Coast Guard. 1In 1946, a new pier was built to accommodate more vessels and additional personnel were added to staffs at both stations. In 1950-1951, a new tower was constructed which served as both stations' Headquarters until 1984 when it became Station #2's Headquarters. In 1995-1996, a large hangar/museum complex was constructed at Station #2 which contains artifacts dating back to 1917 through 1936 inclusive. This gift from anonymous donors preserved many memories associated with this important station in our town history! Today, both stations are home to an amazing collection of vintage equipment including traffic control towers (1925), lifejackets (1946), weather balloons (1964), decommissioned boats (1982), and much more! All of these items provide unique insight into our coast guard's past but also remind us that we are here today to support those who rely on us!
