Port Orange, Florida is a city located in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Founded in 1827 by white settlers as Port Royal on Gainesville River, it became a town in 1848 and then a city in 1907. In 1970, it merged with Sanford to form the Orlando metropolitan area. The economy of Port Orange has been base mostly on agriculture since its founding; today it is a bedroom community for Orlando and Kissimmee. The first human beings to arrive in what is now Port Orange were Native American traders from Georgia who named the location "Potoquoddy" after their canoe-borne visit there in 1765. Spanish missionaries landed here during the early 1800s seeking to proselytize Christianity among Seminole Indians who had long inhabited this region. A smallpox outbreak in 1819 destroyed most of both the Indian and European settlements; however, an African slave trader named John Swanton established himself as one of the area's largest landholders before his death several years later. He left behind extensive plantations that produced sugar cane and cotton until his death at age 94 in 1830 from yellow fever contracted while working on one of these plantations near present day downtown Port Orange. When Florida gained statehood as a separate country following Reconstruction (1868), Gainesville Settlement was one of initial eight towns chartered within Brevard County; Potoquoddy would remain its only permanent residents until 1931 when all but two of those entities – Fort Myers and Daytona Beach – amalgamated into Lakeland & Polk County under Ulysses S Grant’s governorship as part of plans for racial integration within Fla’s new Nationally segregated Southwestern Territory). The original white settlers were farmers who cultivated corn, potatoes, beans and squash on large lots irrigated with canals dug through ridges running parallel to present day US 1/ backed by cedar trees that still line many intersections throughout town today: Pioneer Road @ SR 523 (now called Central Avenue), W Dixie Highway @ US 231 (the old alignment between I-4/I-5) & Cove Road @SR 520 are some notable examples .
