In 1847, Captain Johnathan Webster bought land near the now-demolished Coffee Plantation and began to roast coffee on his plantation. By 1870, he had built a gristmill and started shipping coffee to Jacksonville.
Port Orange, Florida is a city in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,561 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Jupiter Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Port Orange" was given to the town by Major General James Wilkinson in 1794 after he and his troops disembarked there from HMS "Orion" during their campaign against Spanish forces in Pensacola Bay. Port Orange had been founded as a trading post by Captain John Stroud in 1787. It grew rapidly due to its position on the railroad and commerce became an important factor in its development over time. In 1821, it became a county seat under Seminole Indian Treaty #8 and remained so until 1907 when it merged with Volusia County. The first post office opened in Port Orange on May 3, 1824. The name change came about because at that time all mail was delivered through Jacksonville and Orlando instead of coming through Fort Myers or Tampa which made for slower delivery times for items such as hats and coats which were carried out into town for sale. The first store opened along present day State Road 9A near what is now Lake George Boulevard in 1829; it was known as the White House Store after President James Kapp’s home redecorated by his widow while he was still living at Marthasville plantation (now part of Sanford). In 1836, concerns began to grow about Tecumseh’s Raid on Mobile because American traders feared that smallpox might spread among Native Americans who would be exposed if they learned about vaccinations being developed at that time by Dr. John Sabin and others working for the U.S Army Medical Expeditionary Force based at Camp Chase near Philadelphia (then called Fort Mifflin). On December 15 of that year, Acting Major General Nicholas Johnston ordered Colonel Isaac Watts to take command of Company G of “Militia fencibles” stationed at Fort Brooke on Jupiter River opposite modern day Palm Beach County) early morning before any other troops could arrive as part of operations code named “Eagle Claw” designed to prevent Smallpox vaccinations from reaching Mobile Indians who might become infected along with their families If successful this operation would demonstrate U.S military strength thereby deterring future raids By January 8th LtCol Watts had 1 company & 10 men remaining & Capt Hawkins reported no sign of Indians but establishment looked abandoned so he ordered another company back up w/10 men today pic./ Credit: USArmy photos FtBrooke Museum Although unsuccessful militarily Eagle Claw served notice to American Indians eastward THAT OUR MILITIA WAS HERE!
