Port Orange, Florida is a small city in the southeastern corner of Monroe County, Florida. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Miami metropolitan area. The city is located on U.S. 1 between Gainesville and Ocala, about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Orlando and 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Miami. In 1821, a group of local businessmen built Fort Walton Beach on an island near today's downtown Port Orange for military purposes. In 1845, citrus growers began exporting oranges to Miami and other southern cities through what became known as "the orange belt." By 1860, more than 100 mills had been built along US 1 north of town for processing fruit products such as oranges, apples and pears into juice and vinegar; flour; cheese; soap; baking powder; cigarettes; and tires etc., all from citrus trees grown within commuting distance of town by farmers who raised chickens or pigskin boots to provide fresh meat for their families during early winter months when there was no market for these goods outside town limits.. In 1896, former Confederate Gen . Robert Ewell founded Jacksonville Landing on Indian Key about 9 miles (14 km) northwest of downtown Port Orange with plans to create an access point for American troops brought overland through Mobile Bayberry River crossing due south then east across Mobile Bayberry Creek Bridge just beyond today's business district before continuing northeast along Indian Key Drive past today's lighthouse where he landed his floatplane passengers at high tide before flying them back down river to Jacksonville Landing with supplies they would need while their ship waited out high water at milepost number nine until relieved by larger vessels coming upriver under cover of darkness...
