La Vega named his new town after himself – which may have been why it quickly became one of Jacksonville’s most prominent communities – while Escobar developed a Panic Vineyard nearby (nowEscobar Farms). The town grew rapidly during Reconstruction following America’s Civil War due in large part to shipping handled by Jacksonville’s portage route between Tampa Bay and Key West via Fort Myers and Naples locks; during those days Winters Haven had over 100 boardinghouses and 300 workers ashore processing salt pork, cottonseed oil, sugar cane juice etc.. In 1881 James Gadsden bought 2200 acres (10 km2) northeast of present-day downtown for $5000 from La Vega; Gadsden renamed his property “Port Orange” after himself two years later when he moved into his new home with about 100 others.
