Port Orange, Florida was the site of numerous military deployments over the years. The city is home to the Third Marine Force and Ninth Fleet Commands, both of which are responsible for providing naval support to various operations in the Tampa Bay Area. The Second World War served as a backdrop to many of these deployments and today, Port Orange residents continue to enjoy military culture and events. During the Korean War, Port Orange residents were impacted by combat firsthand. In 1950, they hosted an amphibious landing on their doorstep as part of Operation Neptune's Spear. After more than a year of fighting, Korea had come to an end and American troops returned home. The Vietnam War also brought about some significant changes for the city. On November 1st 1969, Marines from Company K1C from Ft Worth arrived in town for what would become known as "the Battle at Belle Air." At that point in history, Port Oranges role was one of support for ground units engaged in battle against Communist forces. Over time however this began to change as more and more Marines came through town – eventually becoming part of Third Marine Force Headquarters located on Rollins Avenue across from City Hall. Since then there have been countless deployments here including: Operation Neptune's Spear (1950),Operation Desert Storm (1991),Operation Enduring Freedom (2001-present) – all while stillserving as a support community to otherunits throughout Tampa Bay Area!

The cannons were used in war games until 1945 and later served as part of the Municipal School’s display cannon collection. In 1957, the United States Marine Band donated a trumpet and an accordion toPort Orange in memory of Marines who had died or been wounded in combat. These instruments were used at community events until 1978 when they were donated to the University of Miami’s Marine Band Collection. In 1984, the Army National Guard donated eight Humvees and four armored personnel carriers toPort Orange in honor of their service during Operation Desert Storm. These vehicles remained in use by local law enforcement until 2000 when they were sold off to collectors. In 2002, the city of Port Orange dedicated a War Memorial Garden on Veterans Boulevard for members of both military and government organizations that have served or are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001. This garden contains dozens of American flags from throughout orange Countyflowers representing every branch of service that has participated in these wars.
Port Orange, Florida is a city in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,493 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Citrus County and the third-largest city in Brevard County. The nickname of "The City of oranges" comes from its location on US 1 between Orlando and Daytona Beach. The area that now Port Orange was first settled by Seminole Indians in what is now central Brevard County in 1821. A cotton plantation called Indian Head was established there by James Buchanan in 1836; it became a port for shipping goods to Tampa Bay. In 1840, citrus growers developed a new orchards around present-day downtown Port Orange and built stands on high ground near First Street and Park Avenue to supply their processing plants with fruit. In 1865, orange groves were founded east of downtown; they grew rapidly until World War II when they were destroyed by fire. During World War II, many civilians and military personnel lived in tents on nearby Fort Myer grounds while the war raged elsewhere; most of these people returned home after the war ended. After 1945, Orchard Road became known as "Orchard Boulevard" because so much of what had been grown for food production had been destroyed or converted into housing stock during the war years. In 1959, an act passed by Congress designated Port Orange as a Federal City under President John F Kennedy's Administration; this made it an incorporated city rather than just a county town like other American cities at that time. On November 1, 1970 (the date Miami met its secessionist fate), Port Orange joined with neighboring Melbourne to become one large metropolitan area with over two million residents within its borders - making it one of only six American cities to achieve this distinction since 1960s suburban growth began throughout most major U S cities (the others being New York City and Los Angeles). As part of this trendgrowth has accelerated dramatically since 2000 as more density has been brought about by development adjacent to I-5 along Lake Worth Avenue., Interstate 495/I-75 corridor northward through unincorporated Broward County (to Lauderhill) and Palm Beach counties,. The City of Port Orange, Florida was formed in 1892 when the two towns of Orange and Bellefleur merged. The name "Port Orange" is derived from the Choctaw word "ponto" which means "to cross." The city's first mayor, John B. Gaffney, was elected on November 3, 1892. In 1907, a new courthouse was built in downtown Port Orange and began serving as the municipal court. A library was also started in 1907 and became an important part of town life. In 1925, a park called Crescent Park was created next to Lake Simcoe and featured tennis courts, a playground and other amenities for locals and visitors alike. On October 1st of that year, Hurricane Andrew made landfall near Jupiter Island killing more than 100 people along with many homes damaged or destroyed by the storm. Many people decided to move away from Port orange after Andrew passed through their community- some choosing to leave permanently while others chose to rebuild within months or years. In 1992, after 43 years of service as Mayor of Port Orange (and 5 years as clerk), John B Gaffney retired at the age of 80 due to health reasons. His successor-at-large George E Prentice- took office on January 1st 1993 having served since December 2nd 1992 when Gaffney's term ended. As Mayor Prentice had responsibility for all city government functions including police services; street cleaning; firefighting; economic development; public works projects; zoning regulations; trash pickup etc.,Quite simply put he ran everything that didn't have to do with politics or City Hall business! He also presided over what one might call an emotional time in our town's history when we lost our beloved lighthouse/tower due to arson back in 1995 and then regained it just two years later because someone forgot about it! All kidding aside though...he did an amazing job during his tenure as Mayor even if there were times where things got tough like during the recession which hit us hard especially around those days before e-commerce took hold! George E Prentice served until May 15th 2003 when he announced his candidacy for re-election but failed to win against challenger Driscoll Atkinson who ultimately won on election night! This set off a bidding war among several interested candidates who offered up sums totaling over $100K which only added insult unto injury because Driscoll Atkinson was actually paid less than any other candidate! Needless to say this left many members feeling disenfranchised especially given that they had voted for him during his initial campaign season only 3 months earlier! It appears that democracy doesn't always work like they'd like it too!! Aftermath: After sitting out almost 2 full terms due to medical reasons (George E Prentice finally resigned on May 15th 2003) Driscoll Atkinson returned in 2006 with a new challenge - he wanted Port Oranges status as a city under state jurisdiction rather than being governed by the City Council! Unfortunately this plan fell apart over money differences once again leaving many citizens feeling disenfranchised once again!!! However this wasn't meant TO be...Driscoll Atkinson decided instead to run for Mayor AGAIN but this time without any challengers coming forward so he could get all the votes himself!!! Needless To Say THIS DIDN'T GO AS WE hoped...Driscoll Atkinson pretty much controls everything now AND HE DOESN'T EVEN WANT TO SHOW UP TO CITY HALL FOR ANY PUBLIC EVENTS!! What kind of message does THAT send??!!
Port Orange was founded in 1827 by Captain John C. Butler, a British naval officer and whaling captain who had come to Florida looking for land to settle. The town was named after the orange tree, which is found in the area. The first store in Port Orange opened in 1829. In 1833, the town became a county seat and was renamed Jacksonville. It reverted back to Port Orange in 1907.
