The first Europeans to visit Port Orange were traders from Spain and Portugal who arrived in 1614. In 1795, Englishman James Cook sailed along the coast of Florida and named it after his ship HMS Resolution after finding orange groves there. In 1821, Spanish soldiers founded a mission at what is now called Santa Fe de Port Orange. In 1893, white settlers started to arrive in Port Orange and they named the communityafter their favorite fruit: oranges. The first citrus production began in 1897 when two brothers named Wofford bought land near present-day downtown Port Orange for $1 per acre (and paid with Indian labor). By 1907, over 100 acres had been leased for orchards and Citrus Hall was built to store produce. In 1912, oranges were being exported from Port Orange for the first time. During World War II, the naval base played an important role in Allied efforts against Nazi Germany; many ships were stationed at anchor around town while battle took place off shore. The local economy flourished as war supplies flowed into town through inland waterways such as the St Johns River; however, very few people lived within city limits because of high housing prices then ($25 per month). By 1945, only about 100 residents remained in downtown Port Orange; most had moved out to nearby suburbs or rural areas due to wartime inflation (the cost of living increased 400% between 1940 and 1945).
