These were just some of the more memorable gifts given during Operation Neptune’s Spear; others includeunit insignia such as hats, badges ornaments and mugs off numerous warships throughout Europe. Port Orange, Florida is a town located in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by white settlers in 1836 as an agricultural community on the east coast of what is now Port Orange Township. The first post office was established in 1838 and the first school was built in 1840. In 1851, Port Orange became a city and the name changed to Port Orchard after a local water tower that had been erected on State Road 9 near present-day US-423 (now SR-231). When Volusia County was created from portions of Brevard County in 1912, Port Orange became one of its original townships. The population reached 15,000 by 1951 when it annexed parts of Sanford and Lakeland Counties also within Volusia County. In 1966, when Volusia COUNTY merged with Seminole County to form Orlando County, Port Orange became one of its original townships within Orlando City Park. Today's residents are descendants of early white settlers who arrived during Jacksonville's heyday as a commercial center on the Strazile River in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many businesses still operate today including two banks - First National Bank and Old Navy - two grocery stores - Safeway and Kroger - several churches including First Baptist Church which dates back to 1892 and Second Baptist Church which opened in 1907; four schools: Booker T Washington Elementary School (founded 1903), Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic School (founded 1928), John F Kennedy High School (opened 1957) and Stonington Christian Academy (founded 1984). There are also several restaurants including Ponderosa Steakhouse & Barbecue which has been open since 1978; Anello's Italian Restaurant which opened 2006; Seaside Drive Inn which closed 2008; port orchard countryclub which reopened 2009; Havana Libre restaurant which reopened 2016 In recent years there has been interest expressed for developing retail areas such as Cascades Mall anchored by BJ’s Wholesale Club and selective demolition or redevelopment of historic homes along US-423 in order to create more space for development near I-4 exit 95A/SR-231 junction known colloquially as "The Garden." A study prepared for developer JBG Realty Advisors indicates potential development around this area could result in over 1 million square feet (+/- 350 thousand sq ft) floor space being available across 11 blocks +/- 3 blocks adjacent to I-4 exit 95A/SR-231 junction with future light rail service planned connecting these areas

In 1835, the area was annexed by Jacksonville, Florida and in 1861, Tampa Bay became part of the Confederate States of America. The Union blockade of Tampa Bay caused economic damage to the city and in 1865, Tampa seceded from the Confederacy. On November 15th, 1865, General John B. Stuart's Confederate army attacked and destroyed what is now known as Apollo Park in downtown Tampa for control of what had been their original spring line of supply for the city.
