Port Orange is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 11,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent white settler in what is now Port Orange was Captain John Smith who came in 1763 with his family from Portsmouth, England. He named the area after his ship "Orlando" which he had captained and seen approach American shores on its maiden voyage from London to Miami in 1765. The name stuck and for many years nothing more was done about it because there wasn't anything of interest near by that could be called "Orange". In 1824, General Andrew Jackson's army burned down Fort Myers (now Miami), destroying all its stores and leaving the town without food or ammunition. The remaining Indians were forced to leave and some went as far as Pensacola where they started trading goods they had acquired back home with Spanish traders looking for help getting back into America. In 1835, the name of Port Orange changed to Jacksonville after then-President James K. Polk visited that city during a Yacht Squadron visit to Mobile Bayou on Lake Pontchartrain while campaigning for election to Ulysses S. Grant's presidency; however Jacksonville never caught on as an official name like Orlando did and reverted back to its original spelling when annexation by Sanford occurred in 1885.* * Note: This article does not mention whether or not Jacksonville annexation happened due to political correctness issues or something else entirely

Port Orange is a town in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–West Palm Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Port Orange was founded in 1915 by Captain John Smeaton and his family as an agricultural center on the St Johns River. The town became an important transportation hub for citrus fruits and other goods coming down the river from Miami and Jacksonville. In 1923, Port Orange developed into a full-fledged city with its own government and police department. The first mayor of Port Orange was Wirt Hite. In 1964, the US Interstate 95 interchange opened near the town limits making it easier to get around for people living in nearby Kissimmee and Daytona Beach. This made Port Orange more competitive with those cities as well asBroward County to the east which had been developing rapidly since World War II. In 1978, when Volusia County merged with Brevard County, Port orange became one of its components within that new county. The high-density housing development called "Orlando citrus" began in the early 1990s but continued into recent years due to increasing demand from workers commuting into downtown Orlando or central Florida duringossom season (late November through early December). By 2006 total land area had grown to over 3 square miles (7 km2), exceeding any previous growth in this area; however much of this growth has occurred within existing neighborhoods rather than moving outwards towards new developments like "Orlando citrus". As a result of this increased density some public services have become increasingly difficult or impossible to provide such as water or trash collection despite assurances from developers that these will not be affected; streets have also been widened but at great cost relative to what was formerly needed for vehicular traffic only now removing parking spaces makes it difficult for residents who must leave their cars parked outside their homes while they go shopping or work inside their stores; also many new subdivisions have been built without consideration for parking requirements which has caused problems for planners trying to make future plans that take account of current infrastructure limitations
