By 1840, most of present-day Hillsborough County had been organized when Captain John Pemberton founded Mayfield Landing on Charlotte Harbor for British immigrants seeking refuge from American slavery during the Seminole Wars (1835-1846). Miles Standish became one of the first white men to live permanently in what later became Port orange when he moved there from Jacksonville with his family in 1845. He built an estate which still stands today on Third Street within sight of current day City Hall. The land that would become Port Orange was acquired by Major Grosse Pointe Blank Co., heirs to General David Dixon’s interests following their acquisition of Fort Gaines near Mobile Bay during Opium Wars (1839-1841). In 1848, citrus groves were started here by Augustus Chapman and others interested in this new fruit crop after they discovered that oranges could be grown successfully where other crops had failed before. citrus industry continued to grow until World War II when it disappeared due to droughts and other factors that impacted many areas ofFlorida at that time including ports such as Tampa Bay; Miami; Orlando; Pensacola; Key West; Saint Petersburg

Today, Port orange is still home to some 7500 residents including many who commute into Jacksonville or Tallahassee for work each day – making it one of America’s largest cities without a large metropolitan area (though there are plans underway). Port Orange was founded by Major John P. Morgan in 1827. It became a town in 1836 and was named for Major Morgan, who had purchased the land from the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The first post office was established in Port Orange on July 1, 1837. In 1840, Fort Union was built to protect the town from Seminole raids. The fort was destroyed by Seminoles in 1844 and replaced with Fort Walton Beach on February 3, 1840. In 1861, Fort Walton Beach became Jacksonville and Port Orange lost its status as a town. In 1865, the United States Military Academy at West Point moved to Jacksonville and took over the school buildings in downtown Port orange. In 1898, after Jackson County became part of Florida, Port Orange became an unincorporated community again under state jurisdiction.
