Port St. Lucie, Florida is a small town located in the Miami-Dade County area of south Florida. The population was 5,032 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is included in the Broward County seat of Fort Lauderdale. The Port St. Lucie community was founded by two Dutchmen, Cornelis and Johan Hesseltine, in 1795 as a stop on their way to Cuba from what is now New York City. The Hesseltines named their new community after Louis XIV of France who had recently become king of Spain and ruled over much of South America at that time. The first post office in Port St Lucie was established in 1827; it served as the name for both the community and its original mailing address which was then known as "Hesseltineville."
