The history of the Port St. Lucie Army Base begins with World War I. In 1916, the United States entered into a treaty with Great Britain that gave the United States control over the port of St. Lucie on Florida's west coast. The US military began construction of an airfield at this site in 1917 and soon afterward, began stocking ammunition and other supplies for war efforts. In 1922, following World War II, Standish Air Station was activated at Port St. Lucie Army Base and it served as a staging area for fighter planes during the Korean War. The base also became home to Detachment 2/3rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), which was activated in 1951 as one of two infantry regiment brigades available to active duty in the newly formed Republic of Vietnam. During the Vietnam War, Port StLucie Army Base played an important role in helping to support Operation Rolling Thunder, which aimed to drive North Vietnamese forces out of South Vietnam by using aerial bombardments and ground attacks against their positions along the country's southern border. In 1970, when Fort Pierce Municipal Airport reopened after being closed for several years due to airport development projects within its boundaries, Port St. LucieArmy Base became an integral part of that airport's operations with its own runway and Hangar 1B. Over time however, many services offered by both airports were absorbed by eitherPort-St-Lucie or neighboring Flagler Beach Municipal Airport until 1992 when Fort Pierce Municipal Airport was merged into Flagler Beach Municipal Airport as well.
