Port St. Lucie, Florida was founded in 1834 as a small trading post on the mouth of the Santa Teresa River. The town quickly grew and by 1851 had become a busy center for salt and fishing industry. In 1915, the town was renamed after Admiral Nelson, who played a significant role in British victory over Napoleon at Trafalgar. The town's fortunes declined during World War II with its shipping industry disappearing into the war effort. However, since the late 1990s, Port St. Lucie has regained some of its former glory with its growing nightlife and tourism industry.
Port Lucie was founded in 1883 by the Vincennes and Erie Railroad. The town was originally named "Rocks" after the soft, white sand which lined the harbor. In 1893, a post office was established in Port Lucie with the name of "Lucie". In 1910, the name of the town was changed to "St. Lucia" after St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago. The first school in Port Lucie opened in 1915 andwas operated by nuns from Notre Dame de los Angeles convent on Main Street. The convent closed in 1922 and all of its students were moved to nearby Hillsborough County High School which continued to operate until 1969 when it merged with another high school to form Miramar High School. In 1929, a sawmill that had been built on North Mackey Boulevard became a coal mine making Port Lucie one of Florida's leading coal mining towns. The mill continued operations until 1974 when it closed down due to declining production rates and competition from other mines in the area. The town began developing an amusement park called "Noah's Ark" which opened in 1937 but failed to make much money due to low attendance levels and subsequent closure two years later. It reopened as Tropical Park II in 1951 before closing again in 1957 due to lack of funds. It reopened as a waterpark called Atlantis World Waterpark before being bought by Adventure Island theme park who renovated it into their current attraction format known as Aqua Lagoon which opened on May 25th, 2013..
