Port St. Lucie, Florida is a small town located in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population of the town was 12,545 as of the 2010 census. The town is part of the Fort Pierce–Lake Worth metropolitan area. The history of Port St. Lucie can be traced back to 1824 when Nicholas Biddle bought eight acres (3 ha) of land at what is now downtown Port St. Lucie and named it "Biddle's Point." He built a trading post on the point and used it to ship goods from New York City to Europe. In 1827, he sold his interest in Biddle's Point to John Morrissey for $5,000 cash. Morrissey renamed the point "Port Royal" after his father-in-law, King George III of England who had donated land for the colony in 1763. In 1829, Captain James Ewing purchased 1/4 acre (0.2 ha) from Nicholas Biddle for $10USD which became known as "Ewing's Island". He developed it into an unusable swamp and built a stockade around it to protect himself and his crew from Seminole Indians who were raiding his shipments out of Tampa Bay bound for markets in South America during that time period In 1832 Ewing sold 500 acres (200 ha) on "Island No." 2 to Jens Jensen for $25USD which became known as Jensen's Plantation due to its large sugarcane crop that was grown there until 1907 Jensen also founded Hendrickson Paper Company with Jens Pedersen in 1865 which manufactured paper products such as ballots and election cards before becoming extinct in 1925 . In 1840, Daniel Boone paddled across Lake Okeechobee from Fort Myers eastward towards Port StLucie where he stopped at Jensen's plantation on Isle No . 2 near present day downtown Port St Lucie . From this stop Boone began pathfinder exploration leading him eventually down US 1 through today’s Greenacres neighborhood towards Everglades National Park becoming one of only two people ever documented reaching this far north along U S 1 before 1800 As American settlers moved onto their new property further inland they continued development here including: building wharves on both sides of Indian River; founding towns such as Jacksonville by Captains Hernando DeSoto and Alonso de la Vega; open-air shopping centers like Aventura Mall; airport expansion starting with Boeing Field opening in 1958 followed by Miami International Airport opening in 1959; major annexation by Broward County making Port St lucie an unincorporated municipality with its own police department beginning December 15th 1975; erection of Interstate 95 bypassing downtown serving primarily military bases within miles while creating jobs testifying to postwar diversification brought about by high technology businesses moving into these areas etc., etc., etc...
