The first coffee beans were roasted on the property of Mr. George Wertheimer in 1868. It was not until 1915 that J & C Trenholm began selling their unique blends of Arabica coffee beans from their shop at 9th and Court Streets. This business was later moved to 6th and Broadway Streets where it continued to trade until 1978 when it closed its doors for good due to competition from Dunkin’ Donuts. In 1984, Gary Duhon opened his own roastery and cafes called The Gourmet Place which became one of the most popular places for consumers to purchase gourmet coffee in town. In addition, The Gourmet Place served as the home base for many local businesses who partnered with him on this venture such as Fish Unlimited, Baja Beach Grill and more recently Pinto’s Pizza which has since relocated to another location on State Road 62 just outside of town limits! During its time at 7th Street & State Road 62nd Avenue it was known as “Port Clinton steakhouse”! Since then, several other restaurants have opened up around town including Topaz Coffee House (which closed down in 2015), Roasters by Rick Steves (which reopened in 2016) and finally Sizzle Coffee House (which opened up earlier this year). Port St. Lucie, Florida is a town located in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 4,813 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Sarasota-Bradenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Port St. Lucie" comes from Nicholas de Porto who settled on the present day site in 1768 and named it mouth of Fort Pierce after his Portuguese fortification at that location. The first post office was established in 1827. The community took its name from Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León's flagship, Santa Catalina which landing in 1513 on what is now called Port Lucie Island near modern-day St Petersburg created a need for a better landing point for supplies and passengers travelling between Cuba and Tampa Bay. In 1881, owner of the island James Auld donated land to make way for an indoor harbor and renamed the port as Port St.Lucie after himself and other members of his family including brother Andrew J., Sr., James Auld II (1828-1911), Andrew III (1892-1967), Mrs.(Mrs.)Juanita Key (1894-1981) In 1902, local physician Dr Solomon Sussman had opened one of America’s first plastic surgery clinics at 6th Street & US 1st Avenue with three operating rooms being dedicated to plastic surgery operations only; he also operated outpatients’ offices across US 1st Avenue from his clinic until 1954 when he moved all his office into building #2 on 5th Street which still stands today as the Sussman Building housing many outpatient services such as physical therapy, speech pathology etc.. Dr Soloman Sussman was posthumously honored by President Nixon with Congressional Gold Medal citation in 1969 Citation: “For his great work in helping to develop medical care for Americans through innovative techniques of plastic surgery” The city became home to many businesses during World War II as thousands of Floridians – both men and women – joined up to serve their country duringWWII including several banks doing business on Duval Street like First National Bank (1940-) until they were closed down by American Banks Bancorp Incorporated effective November 8 1952 because of government regulations followingthe suspensionof gold bullion trading activities
In 1847, Spain ceded Florida to the United States in the Treaty of Paris. In 1868, the U.S. Congress passed an act that created Fort Pierce as a military post on St. Lucie Island in Miami-Dade County. The fort served as a base for American forces during World War II and was later abandoned. The fort served as the site of some of the earliest organized human settlements in Miami-Dade County when Englishman James Kelleher and his family settled there in 1795. The first white settler on St. Lucie Island was John Fenton who arrived there with his family in 1800; they named their island after Fenton's father, Sir George Kirkland, 1st Baronet (1748-1824). In 1868, construction began on what is now Port St. Lucie Boulevard and Indian Key Road across from Fort Pierce National Military Park which became an important commercial center for both Miami-Dade County and panhandle Florida following its establishment as a military post. By 1870, Ft. Pierce had become one of South Florida's most important naval installations with barracks for more than 2,000 enlisted men and women as well as stores and warehouses ashore plus landward facilities including a hospital and arsenal/museum complex overlooking Clearwater Bay
