Port St. Lucie, Florida is a town on the southern coast of Florida and the county seat of Martin County. The population was 39,811 at the 2010 census. It lies just south of Tampa Bay on Gulf Boulevard, about midway between Tampa and Miami. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Port St. Lucie were born in nearby Clearwater in 1663, including Captain John Smith and his party who explored this area in 1668-1669. In 1764 Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon landed here with his ship "La Vella" after sailing around Cape Canaveral for two weeks looking for an entrance to the Caribbean Sea and finding none but shoals of barracudas (gulfstream dolphins). He named this place San Marcos de las Casas after one of his captains, Marcos de Aguilar y Balboa, captain general of Mexico City'sArmy under Diego Rivera during that time (1598-1600). In 1821 Indian Chief Cadequiel Causey led a group of Seminole Indians from here overland to central Florida in search of new land they had been promised by Spain as part of their cession at the Treaty of Santa Ana. After months traveling through central Florida they reached Lake Okeechobee near present day Jacksonville on November 5th; thence moving northeastward along the shoreline until reaching Polkton Prairie where they camped for several days before continuing their journey eastward into Indian country which they reached on December 6th near Cedar Key. On December 11th Ponce de Leon sighted land off Harbour Island and called it Las Islas Florida because he thought it was Cuba. On February 14th 1823 he reported that he had found "a great bay or gulf [in] which lay many small islands." This became known as Port StLucie because Englishman Sir John Hawkins discovered it while sailing through this same area on October 13th 1584 aboard HMS Discovery when he sighted "Island X" off Cape Canaveral north-northwestof Fort Myers - hence probably "St Lucia". In 1824 Lieutenant Charles Finney issued a report describing some improvements made since his visit two years earlier: "...a road has been constructed from Point Lookout down river to Mobile street...the town has recently been beautified with large trees planted by public subscription...A brick church has also been erected..." In 1830 Governor Peter Kapp appointed James Auld postmaster at Port StLucie after seeing an advertisement placed by private citizens Ezra Waygoods and William Collins for someone to take care of mail service between Tampa and Jupiter.] In 1840 a lighthouse was built northwestof present day downtown Port StLucie by private enterprise utilizing local sands taken from Wahoo Sound beach within fishing rights granted by King George III.; lightkeeper Isaac Allard manned the beacon until 1886 when operation passed to USS Potts(1862) who kept it continuously automated until being decommissioned in 1978.] In 1893 Japan leased 350 acres comprising what is now downtown from US Interests Department so as not to impact valuable agricultural lands used commercially by locals; however due to economic recession following World War I Japanese companies closed up shop leaving port idle until 1946 when US company Maritimo Corporation acquired interest in port property & began development ]Maritimo Corporation later became Sun corporation]After WWII port resumed normal operations with maritimo handling all cargo]Today harbor access allows cruise ships berth & provides good job opportunities]}

The town also developed into a major shipping port with several ships lying at the wharf waiting to be unloaded or towed to other ports around the country. By 1912, Port St. Lucie had more than 1,500 residents and was considered one of Florida's most important industrial towns. However, during World War I, the town declined because of its lack of military support and resources; after the war ended in 1918, it again declined until it experienced rapid growth in the late 1920s when it became an official city under Florida law.
