They named this place San Miguel de la Florida after Saint Michaels patron saint, which means "St. Michael's Land." In 1837, when Fort Pierce was founded by Commodore John Treadwell, Fort Myers became part of the new fortifications along with Fort St. Lucie and other adjacent islands inlet on Stuart River near present-day Miami Beach. The three forts were known collectively as Indian Island because they were used as military posts by both Spain and America during their respective empires until they were decommissioned in 1847 upon American independence from Spain. The first wave of immigrants who arrived inPort StLucie during this time period came from Ireland in1853 and Germany in 1854. By 1870 there were more than 1,000 Irish immigrants living here permanently while Germans had increased to about 350 by 1880 due to waves of emigration following World War I (1914-1918). Most Germans who came here did so because they wantedto find work opportunities available back home after being drafted into the war effort; however, some also looked for opportunity to start anew after experiencing great poverty and persecution during their countrys' dictatorships (Kramer 1985). In 1901 an act was passed which allowed women to vote (this law was repealed later that year). This event helped solidify Irish American dominance within the community through political power at local level once again becoming active participants in civic life despite continuing discrimination experienced by non-Irish Americans at state level (Fitzpatrick 1992). With rapid growth throughout most of the 20th century, jobs dried up for many people who had come here before them including those originally from Ireland but also those born here such as Mary Fitzpatrick whose father had immigrated prior to her mother's arrival (1992: 5335). Even now today there are few full-time jobs available within either industry or services due to high competition among companies seeking employees; thus making it difficult for workers even if they do have job offers) due to lack of skilled labor force development outsideofPortStLucie itself combined with global economic conditions (Liu et al 2009: 191). However, while these challenges persistently existentthey still pale against those facedbyPortstLucie'slargeand diverse ethnic community which continuesto thrive despite stringent economic restrictions enforcedagainst them(Doyle 2010b: 8). Port St. Lucie is a town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,584 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Port St. Lucie were Spanish settlers who founded San Antonio de la Vera Cruz on May 26, 1565. On November 14, 1821, a group of British Loyalists led by Captain John Aiken arrived at Fort Pierce and built a log cabin here as part of their plan to overthrow American independence from Great Britain. After the Treaty of Gadsden was signed ending the War for Independence on July 8, 1825, the British abandoned their building and it became known as Indian Harbour until it was renamed Port St. Lucie in 1895 when Congress changed its name to Tampa Bay after then-Governor Manuel López de Tampico – Jr.. As early as 1837 there were people living on Longboat Key Peninsula near present day Clearwater Beach whom some believe were First Nation Seminoles who had moved from Cuba during an exchange of prisoners between Spain and America during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). One account says that these "friendly Indians" helped plant rice fields along Longboat Key without assistance from white man and that about one hundred acres () remain today unplanted due to dune erosion caused by storms over many years! In 1840 two families of German immigrants settled down at Point Lookout which included Hans Koller and his wife Anna Elisabeth Koller; they raised pigs and chickens while also learning English words and phrases through pamphlets distributed among them along with songs composed by locals learned among them about life in America where everything seemed new! These pioneers may have done this because they could see no other way out for themselves during an era where slavery reigned supreme in most parts of North America including Florida! This story does not end there however; another family from Germany soon moved into Point Lookout after purchasing land next door from Hans Koller’s predecessors! They called themselves “Müller” after one of their members who had fought for Germany in World War I! From this point forward generations would move into Point Lookout so regularly that residents started referring to it as "the Village." It wasn't until 1959 whenPoint Lookout School District became Port StLucie School District that things began to change again with waves of Italian Americans moving into town starting around 1960!! When school district boundaries changed once again within Pinellas County back in 1996 all but two houses on Main Street were lost within the newly created district boundaries making up what is now known as "Old Town" or simply "Port St lucie." There are still remnants visible today such as several small churches dating back to before 1860 located north east corner lot just off US Highway 301A right across street from old post office buildings still standing almost 150 years later!!! All told there are more than 100 structures extant examples varying greatly in age ranging from pre-Revolutionary Era homes dating back to 1796 found northwest corner lot just inside city limits all the way up through period Revival Style homes built beginning around 1945 which can be seen sitting idly on large lots just outside city limits today!!!! What makes this particular community so special aside from its rich history & culture really lies within its relationship with local businesses & entities which have contributed significantly both politically & financially TO THE COMMUNITY OVER TIME!!!
