Port St. Lucie was founded in 1835 by Captain John P. Castine and his wife, Mary Ann Castine. It became an important port on the Atlantic Coast because it had a large population of Native Americans and slaves who transported goods and passengers to and from the sugar islands in Florida. The first European to live in Port St. Lucie was Captain Richard Stockton, who built him a house on the wharf in 1836. In 1840, Captain John Pugh built a small warehouse on what is now Court Street for storage of goods coming into town from the sugar plantations downriver. In 1841, Captains John Fenton and Samuel Jones bought land at what is now First Avenue and Third Street for $2,000 dollars which they used as their primary home until 1850 when they moved to their present home on Second Avenue. From here they operated a store, post office, ferry service, shipbuilding operation (the only one in that area), and also developed some land around the wharf which served as housing for workers during World War II. In 1865-1866 cotton was raised inoperation at what is now First Avenue; this led to more than one hundred families moving into Port StLucie after that year's planting season due to better prices for cotton near Savannah Georgia where it was being produced legally under US law at that time
