The National Guard in Port St. Lucie, Florida was first organized on January 15, 1915 when the Port of Miami Beach activated its military forces to support the Spanish-American War. The following year, on May 1st, 1916, the Panama Canal was opened and with it the need for more soldiers to help protect American interests in Latin America. This increased demand for guardsmen led to the creation of a regular army unit known as "The 2nd Regiment of Infantry." In 1921, this regiment was redesignated as "The 3rd Regiment of Infantry" and continued to serve in that capacity until 1951 when it united with other units within the National Guard Bureau to form The National Guard Bureau's Own Ports Division. In 1965, The National Guard Bureau created The Port St. Lucie Reserve Force which consisted of local reservists from all over Florida. On July 1st, 1966 these reservists were mobilized and became part of The National Guard Bureau's Regular Army Corps Field Forces under command of Major General Burt Hirschman Jr., Commander Ninth Coast Artillery Command. On October 1st 1971 this corps became part of The Governor's Department Navy Militia and State Militia Joint Task Force 349 under Major General Thomas J. Rooney III commander United States Naval Forces Central Command/United States European Command (USN/USESC). On November 3rd 1978 this task force was redesignated as "Task Force 329" and again on December 31st 1990 as "National Guardsmen -Port StLucie". In 1957 both brigades were reorganized into regiments with battalion-sized commands reporting directly to colonel generals commanding brigades or corps level commanderies which then reported directly to general officers commanding armies or air forces elements without brigade commanders present. This change eliminated duplication of effort and made it easier for unit commanders to provide tailored service levels even though many Guardsman remain career soldiers>. Today’s National Guard has a rich history that celebrates America’s values: selflessness; community service; patriotism; democracy; discipline; togetherness. These values are embodied in each member’s oath of allegiance: “to bear arms against all enemies within borders . . . for the defense of my country and its people." National Guard members have responded decisively during some critical moments in our Nation's history including World War II when troops served multiple tours overseas - including Europe - providing crucial reinforcements after Pearl Harbor; Operation Desert Storm when American ground troops aided Saudi Arabia in their fight against Hussein bin Talal Gaddafi; Hurricane Katrina when New Orleans'Guard unit helped lead emergency response efforts while other units provided coverage from Baton Rouge eastward through Louisiana}; The Oklahoma City bombing that left 168 dead and hundreds more injured;; President George H W Bush's Decision Not To seek an Additional Year In Office After 8 years Of Blue Wave Election Loss;; Operation Neptune's Spear--the largest peacetime military operation mounted by any country--in Afghanistan;; Homeland Security Presidential Directive 13-01--establishing standards for screening immigrants applying for admission into the U.S.; Operation Enduring Freedom which grew out of President George Washington's request for 3600 volunteers from Rhode Island who joined him campaigning in Pennsylvania
The Port St. Lucie National Guard was organized on December 15, 1907 and became activated on January 1, 1908. It was redesignated the Port St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office on November 5, 1912 and then the Port St. Lucie Police Department on October 30, 1938. The first Europeans to come ashore on the now-island were Spanish sailors in 1565, who named it "Port St. Lucie" after a nearby cape. The area was originally inhabited by the Calusa people, who may have been the ancestors of the Kissimmee tribe. In 1672, English explorer John Smith discovered and claimed the island for England. The British built a fort on the island in 1768, and used it as an artillery battery during their War of 1812 against United States forces. In 1814, Portugal acquired Florida from Britain as part of its cession of North America; however, Portugal never administered Florida proper and no permanent residents lived there until after American independence in 1820. In 1893, Port St. Lucie became part of Florida's state capital when Tallahassee was moved from Jacksonville to Sanford. However, because Tallahassee is located within Jackson County (Florida's most populous county), it continues to be known as "Tallahassee" throughout its entire history within Florida government since 1893. After losing much of its population during World War II due to military service outside the country and flight into exile following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Tallahassee gradually regained some life over ensuing decades until its current population size greater than that found in Jacksonville today (although it still ranks lower than Gainesville).
