The Miami-based Navy deployed its gifts to Port St. Lucie in the form of small pieces of art, such as a brass sculpture of a sailor and dolphins. The sculptures were placed in various parts of town, including on dockside plazas and at local maritime museums. Gift history can be traced back to 1904 when Commodore George Dewey donated a bronze copy of Neptune's Spear to the city. In 1951, a servicemember from the USS Constitution donated an American flag made out of cloth and straw to provide shade for soldiers working on shore leave in downtown Port st lucie. Port St. Lucie, Florida is a city located on the Port of Miami in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 1,965 at the 2010 census. The area now known as Port St. Lucie was first inhabited by the Calusa people and later by Spanish colonists who named it San Lorenzo de la Florida after San Lorenzo Fernandez, one of their leaders. In 1821, Portuguese settlers arrived and renamed it Fort Pierce after Prince Ferdinand, Duke of Braganza. In 1878–79, when sugarcane production increased along the Volusia River near Jacksonville due to railroad construction, some businessmen in Fort Pierce decided to ship spoil from the sugar cane fields downriver to load onto steamboats and then sell off the cargo at market prices in Jacksonville. They named their company "The Jacksonville Canal Company", but it failed quickly because only a tiny fraction of what they shipped reached its destination. In 1881 they changed their name to "The Santa Fe Railroad Company". This was also their primary business until 1915 when railroads became an important factor in American economic development and new shipping routes were developed inland so that goods could be transported directly from New Orleans to Tampa without sailing across the ocean or traveling through Liverpool or London. With World War I raging outside (and most Americans still living behind closed doors), The Santa Fe Railroad Company promoted itself as a supply line for munitions dealerships needed for war effort; however much freight actually ended up being delivered into Tampa instead because there wasn't enough capacity on existing railways to handle all of it! After the war ended, traffic resumed at a normal level with storage becoming necessary for all that had been delivered during wartime; however this storage never lasted long because containerization made transportation enormously more efficient and costly which resulted in less need for spoilage-laden trains coming into town! In 1925 The Panama Canal Treaty was ratified which opened up new shipping routes between South America and Europe bypassing Havana Harbour; this led directly to increased demand for cargo carried by railroads including The Santa Fe Railway Company which saw its growth potential again! With this increase came job opportunities both inside and outside of San Francisco where many employees started out working on stock cars before moving on up! By 1955 there were over 20 million customers using railway services throughout North America! In 1990s Interstate 95 became realigned cutting through downtown making access further limited so trucking became an increasingly important aspect of local economy although some businesses have since chosen to leave due to lack of competition or government assistance with land reclamation projects (although truckers continue calling downtown "the old port"!).
