The US Navy has been providing service to the Port St. Lucie community since 1851. The USS Constitution was the first ship to dock in Port St.Lucie and served as a hospital during World War I before being sunk in 1917. The USS Florida was commissioned in 1924 and served as the flagship of the 6th Fleet until its decommissioning in 1982. In 2005, the USS Enterprise joins the fleet and serves as Squadron 5's flagship for ceremonies and events throughout the year. In 2006, Expeditionary Unit 2 (EU-2) was activated at Naval Station Mayport with three ships - USS George Washington (CVN-77), USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-66), and USS John F Kennedy (CVN-78) - all delivered by helicopter from Jacksonville, Florida. This unit assists coastal communities along US Banks Marine National Monument coastline with law enforcement activities such as fishing, vessel boarding/searching, treasure hunting, boating safety inspections/safety briefings/and environmental monitoring missions ashore. In 2007, EU-2 increased their mission when they were assigned to assist Marines on Long Beach Island with coastal patrols and search & seizure operations while supplies are unloaded from amphibious assault ships off shore
