Port St. Lucie has a long and varied history of coffee drinking, dating back to the 1800s. In 1892, two Dutchmen named Cornelius Schwartz and Florian van der Walt founded the first African American-owned coffeehouse in America on The Strand in Port St. Lucie. The shop was open for only a few weeks before it was shut down by law enforcement officials because of its racial integration policy. Despite the setback, Schwartz and van der Walt continued to sell their coffee from their business until it closed in 1927. However, this didn’t mean that coffee wasn’t distributed throughout the greater Port St. Lucie area; instead, several different businesses bought and ran the Schwartz cafe until it finally went out of business in 1951. Although Schwarz’s Cafe is most commonly associated with its role as a starting point for African Americans in American coffee culture, there are numerous other Coffee Shops that have been located in and around Port St. Lucie over the years – some that continue to serve up quality cups of joe today while others have closed or gone out of business entirely. In North America, beans were brought over by Spanish sailors in the 16th century and they started to trade goods with Indians along the way. The first European settlers in America also started to brew coffee (and other beverages) for themselves. In 1828, Dutch traders discovered Java Proper while sailing across Asia Minor. They brought some of the earliest seeds of Java Indonesian coffee plants back with them to Holland. This allowed European brewers to start brewing Java-based coffees at home, which became popular among Europeans during this time period. Aftermath of World Wars I & II led to an increased demand for Indonesia-based coffee beans, so plantations were established in Indonesia throughout these years. However, due to political instability in Indonesia during this time period – including communist insurgencies – production ceased entirely from 1965 until 1998. Eventually, however, a new generation of Indonesians initiated efforts towards re-establishing production at old plantations throughout 2006–2007 season GMT when conditions were favourable according to plantation managers; unfortunately there have been no similar developments since then owing partly also to political instability outside of Jakarta). Today tactical coffee farming remains an important part of many Indonesian enterprises that are still active today despite recent setbacks (euphemistically called “therisis”).
