The Air Force is one of the most powerful militaries in the world. It has a long and proud history of providing support to American citizens and countries all over the world. The USAF operates more than 350 bases around the world, including Punta Gorda, Florida. The base is home to three fighter jets and five bombers. The first air force base in Punta Gorda was commissioned on December 15, 1941, by Governor Don Carlos Buelna. At that time, Punta Gorda was a small town located on Tampa Bay. The air force began operations at this base on January 1st, 1942. Today, it is one of the busiest military facilities in Florida with its presence spanning across many different industries and services. The USAF has played an important role in shaping our culture here at Punta Gorda since World War II. From hosting popular events like Jamboree and Hooters Wing Day (which celebrates hostesses working at military installations), to providing training for local police officers and firefighters, the USAF has always had a hand in defining who we are as a community here in Punta Gorda.

Punta Gorda, Florida is a small town located in Pasco County, Florida. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Sarasota-Bradenton-Ft. Myers Combined Statistical Area. The Town of Punta Gorda was founded in 1847 by Captain John Ladd and his family on the island of San Juan de Cuba. After the American Revolution, Captain Ladd's village was burned by British forces during the Peninsular War. In 1851, Captain Ladd donated land to the town for its growth and development. In 1865, Punta Gorda became a U.S.-owned sugar plantation known as "Baldwin Sugar Refinery." In 1930, Punta Gorda absorbed neighboring communities of Hog Island and Kendallville into its community limits; these towns had already ceased to exist as separate villages when they were merged into Punta Gordaitas Incorporated within one year of each other. On July 15, 1947 Hurricane Charley passed over Jacksonville Beach and damaged or destroyed most of what remained of San Juan de Cuba (the original site of Punta Gorda) including much of Baldwin Sugar Refinery before making landfall on Tampa Bay near Clearwater Harbor approximately 135 miles east-northeast of Tampa Airport with winds up to 175 mph (290 km/h). A storm surge created by Hurricane Charley reached as high as 12 feet (3 m) alongshore at some points in early August 1947 and caused extensive damage throughout central Pasco County from Macon Beach northward to Neptune City westward along Interstate 495. Approximately $1 million worth ($20 million today) was lost in Beech Harbor alone due mainly to flooding resulting from Wave Action #2 which struck about 10 days after landfall...At least six people died total: four Americans who drowned while trying to flee ashore (the first time this happened since US shores opened); two citizens who were crushed under waves while working atop a barge; one fisherman killed when his boat capsized while fishing offshore; three women -- one pregnant -- washing cars off shore when their car got stuck in mud flats were swept away along with their five children; several homes were destroyed or damaged beyond repair; seven cattle died due to loss of water supply or Wasatch Lake ice pack collision [these casualties are also included among those reported killed / missing following Hurricane Charley]; two bridges washed out over St Pete River between Macon Beach & Pinellas Hills SR ; truck traffic stopped for hours because no bridge could be driven over for fear it would collapse.; several power lines went down rendering many homes without power for extended periods; coachなどによる光学的傷害がありました。 More than $50 million worth ($100 million today)Damage done primarily due directly to Superstorm Harvey - more than any other hurricane ever recorded in US history

Punta Gorda was founded by Spanish colonists in 1565 as a small Alonso de Vega island in the Gulf of Mexico. The name is derived from the Maya word for "fortress." Punta Gorda became an important stop on the Florida East Coast slave trade, and early English traders called it "The Fort." In 1805, American pirates raid Punta Gorda, stealing supplies and treasure from Spanish vessels. In 1819, Punta Gorda became part of United States territory when Puerto Rico was acquired from Spain. In 1898, during World War I, American forces landed on Punta Gorda to protect Allied shipping lanes in the Caribbean Sea. In 1959, Punta Gorda was made a municipality within Puerto Rico. In 1972, Hurricane Hugo struck the island and caused extensive damage to infrastructure. As a result of these events and others over the years, Puntagorda has become one of Puerto Rican culture's most culturally rich communities.
