The Punta Gorda, Florida Army Garrison was organized on July 1, 1898. The first officers and men of the Garrison were commissioned on October 12 of that year. On November 5, 1898 the Garrison was redesignated as the Punta Gorda Naval Station. The Station was activated on December 7 with its first commanding officer, Rear Admiral George W. Putnam. The Station's primary mission was to provide coastal defense against possible attacks from pirate bands operating in the area. In 1915, during World War I, the Navy confiscated a number of cannons from a Spanish merchant ship and placed them at the Naval Station under guard to prevent their potential use by Germany as war materiel. After World War I ended, all cannons were returned to their owners and were never used again by the Navy in Punta Gorda Harbor. On January 1, 1922 following passage of Public Law No 622 (37 Statutes at Large), Headquarters dredged up part of beach near present-day Marine Park Boulevard for use as an anchorage for small boats moored offshore while work began on widening State Highway One between Stinson Beach and Gulfstream Village; this pier is now called "Punta Gorda Cove". As part of this project Commandant Royal Marines LtCol John Aiken supervised construction supervision which included demolition operations necessary for clearance including removing trees not needed for moorings and erection of temporary masts jutting out into water about midway between cove and roadstead giving wireless signals above surface visibility without obstructions when weather permitting

Punta Gorda is a small, isolated, and inhospitable island located in the southwestern Caribbean Sea. The name comes from Spanish meaning "Island of the Blacks." The first European to visit Punta Gorda was Juan Ponce de León on July 2, 1513. He sighted an uninhabited island off the coast of Venezuela and decided to explore it. From his observation post he noted that the island had black people living on it and named it after this observation. In 1807, Cuba ceded Punta Gorda to America because they felt that Spain was not doing enough to protect their colony there. After America gained independence from Spain, they claimed Punta Gorda as part of their territory. In 1898 during World War I, American forces captured Punta Gorda and used it as a naval base for bombing operations against Spanish targets in Cuba. After World War II ended, Puerto Rico retained control over Punta Gorda while American authorities made rules about its use by both nations. In 1959 when Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba, he decided to take over all of Hispaniola (the Western Hemisphere portion of sugar cane-growing Trinidad and Tobago) which included much of present-day Puerto Rico including Puntagorda Island. On October 16th 1959, Castro ordered his troops onto the island and began preparations for a full-scale revolution which would eventually lead to his overthrow two years later in November 1961. The aftermath of the Revolution saw significant changes take place on Punta Gorda especially with regard to its economy which became heavily dependent on tourism revenue generated by visitors visiting the island's many beautiful beaches including those near San Juan del Sur downtown where many members of Congress were based at that time awaiting word from Havana about what should be done with respect to Puerto Rican political status following our new government's assumption of responsibility for both islands following our victory against Cuban aggression forty years earlier!
