The United States Military has been present in Punta Gorda, Florida since the 1800s. The first military installation in the area was Fort Brooke on Savannah Bay. The fort served as a training ground for troops during the Seminole Wars and was also used as a base for American ships during World War II. From 1942-1945, Punta Gorda was home to Naval Air Station Quonset Point. After the war, NAS Quonset Point became an important naval airbase and support center for Operation Neptune’s Spear, which aimed to retake Taiwan from Japan. The U.S. Navyatal Air Station at nearby Clearwater operated from NAS Quonset Point until it closed in 1978. In 1951, Fort Brooke was transferred to the Army and became known as Camp Blanding beginning operations as an army reserve camp located on Boca Raton Boulevard near US 1 and Atlantic Avenue. At its peak, Camp Blanding housed more than 12,000 soldiers and their families. In 1991, Camp Blanding was renamed Fort Pierce Army Base after then-President George H W Bush placed an order with General John Kelly that all active duty US military installations must be named after service members who have died in Afghanistan or Iraq since 9/11/2001. As part of this order, all barracks at Fort Pierce were renamed “Hussein Barracks” in honor of Iraqi refugees who had temporarily settled in Naples before being relocated to Ft Pierce by President George H W Bush on October 16th of that year pursuant to Executive Order 12936). On December 3rd of that year Saddam Barracks were decommissioned effective January 1st of 1992 following years of budget cuts prior to the Gulf War when newly created DOD components assumed control over all DOD military installations including Ft PierceArmy Bases (Fort PierceAFB) which reverted back to their previous name on February 8th 1993 when residual male enlisted personnel from Camp Blanding completed their honorable discharge requirements (i.e., left active duty service).
