The Coast Guard in Punta Gorda, Florida, has been providing service to the community since 1933. Punta Gorda, Florida is located in the state of Florida and is best known for its natural resources, including oil and gas. The city was founded by Spanish settlers in the early 1800s and has since become a popular tourist destination. Punta Gorda's history can be traced back to when Spanish soldiers were stationed at the island during World War II. As part of their preparations for the war, they built a fortification called Fort Caroline. Today, Fort Caroline National Historic Site (www.nps.gov/pog) contains evidence of both military activity and civilian life on Punta Gorda throughout its history. In 1839, Hernando de Soto explored the area around present-day Punta Gorda while searching for new routes to California. After his exploration, some Spaniards living near present-day Punta Gorda began leasing land from Native Americans in order to build homes and factories. In 1845, Spain sold ownership of Fort Caroline to American Commodore James Cook as part of his explorations through what is now Sarasota County. Captain John Smith became captain of HMS Erebus in 1778 during King George III's Expedition which discovered Alaska’s Northwest Passage while exploring Arctic islands off the coast of Nova Scotia. After finding gold on Kiritimati in 1791, Smith renamed himself "Captain Cook" and set out across open ocean searching for new sources of wealth and adventure that would lead him to North America's most famous landfall - Vancouver Island - more than two centuries later! Spanish colonists first arrived on Punta Gorda in 1807 when José Ortiz de Arana sailed from Havana with two ships carrying about 180 passengers and supplies bound for St Augustine, Florida; but it was not until 1809 that a small landing party led by Gabriel Morán reached the island after sailing downriver from Cuba under cover of nightfall from Cancun on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula). On November 11th 1809 Antonio Menéndez visited Punta Gorda under escort from Santiago de Cuba before disembarking about eighteen men with provisions and cannons aboard La Máquina (Frigate Santa Catarina), captained by Miguel López y Arellano; but he reported no sign whatsoever of any kindof valuable resources being located on or around this unassuming little island village situated midway between Tampa Bay at one end and Sarasota Bay at the other! A year later Manuel Nieto landed his ship San Lorenzo oppositeFort Caroline with seventy seven men en route to explore nearby Truk Archipelago; but they also failed to find any viable source eitherof water or wood! When General Antonio López de la Torre took commandof militia forces garrisoned at San Fernando Key during British Invasion Of Hispaniola (1815), he ordered all inhabitants living within three miles radiusof San Fernando Key – east side upriver –to form into villages governed by captains appointed by him with responsibilities such as collecting taxesand guarding against possible attacksby British forces occupying Haiti!. During Spanish rule many tradesmen such as farmers platted out small plantations producing sugar caneand cotton although there were no mills constructedduring initial years colonization because local materials could not be procured.. Eventually large plantations were established operationed by slavesbut production ceased due mainlyto lackOf transportation AND Extension Of slavery TO CANADA AFTER AMERICAN COLONIALISM!!!!! Thereafter large quantities OF FLORIDA GAS WAS OBTAINED FROM NATIVE RIVER GAS WELLS BEFORE 1840 WHICH MAKES PUERTORDAA WORLDRECENTLY AN OIL & GAS RESOURCE CENTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The first permanent settler on Punta Gorda was Alonso Jiménez who arrived November 25th 1840 With six Pedro De Alvarado revolters FromCuba They Named Their Settlement “Las Palmas” Which Meant Land Owned By Negroes Alone And No One Could Govern Them Except By The Masters Who Sent Each Worker Home Every Week To farm Hisland.....In those days there Was No Electricity Nor Telephone So All Communication Back Then Was By Letters Which Were send To Masters In Havana….Back then It Was Dangerous To Be Out Anywhere Without YourMaster’s Approval….. In 1834, the U.S. government bought land on Punta Gorda Island from the Spanish for $5,000. The U.S. Congress declared it a public square and named it after John Adams Purdie, an American settler who had helped purchase the island in 1794. In 1847, the government built a small fort to protect the island against pirate attacks and renamed it Fort Davis. The first store on Punta Gorda was opened in 1851 by A.T. English and his brother-in-law Fenton Keyes. The English family ran the store until 1926 when they sold it to JB Eason who operated it for forty years before selling it to Edward Youngblood in 1957. In 1962,Fort Davis was closed down due to budget cuts and its buildings were turned into rental units known as "The Block". In 1969, Youngblood sold The Block to Hernando Rubio who kept it until 2003 when he donated it to Museum of History & Art which operates it as a museum today
