Punta Gorda, Florida is an unincorporated community located on the island of Punta Gorda in the United States Virgin Islands. It is also known as "The HottestPlaceOnIsland". The name comes from Spanish and means "point of headland." The population was 1,021 as of 2010. The first people to live in what is now Punta Gorda were Native American hunters and fishermen who roamed the island during the early 18th century. A small fort was built by Englishman George Anson at Point Comfort in 1795. In 1806, US Commodore John Crayton established a Naval Station at Punta Gorda which served as a base for naval operations against Spanish pirates during the War of 1812. In 1814, Colonel James Wilkinson developed land on which he erected a house and plantation called Wilkinson's Key. After Wilkinson's death in 1821, his heirs divided his estate among themselves with sharecropping practices common then. From this point forward, ownership passed through male kin until it became fully vested in females upon passage of the Social Security Act Amendments of 1935. In 1861 when Union forces invaded Cuba, General Robert Ewing decided to cross over to Cuba and attack Havana with his 10,000 men under cover of darkness while supplies were being brought ashore by sea from Trinidad–on-the-Island (now Puerto Rico). As night fell across Santiago de Cuba he ordered Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter to block off all entrances into that city so that no reinforcements could be landed without fear ofBattlefleet Action or capture by hostile Cuban troops led by Captain José Francisco Vázquez de Corrales y Gómez de Ayala y Fernández de la Cueva (1789-1858). Just before dawn on December 20th 1865 Commodore Porter heard gunshots coming from Havana Harbour; soon afterwards heflagship USS Stennis arrived at anchor off Havana Harbor with its full complementof 11 gunsnery vessels including two frigate ships/carriers HMS Liverpool (Cdr John Smith)and HMS Devonshire(Cdr Augustus Fenton), each carrying eight torpedoboats having been placed athwart both approachesto protect astrengthlessvesselsfromdamage During battle off Campeche Bay five torpedoes were firedbyUSSStennisandonewaspitchedbyHMSDevonshireintotheportmastof CSSFlorida (excessive firing prohibited under international law). AftermathofbattlesthanepassagewaytowithSSFloridaintoHavanaBayfor repairswas negotiatedthus endingthewarinHAvana Harbor.(1) Ewing's crossing created several problems for Americans living on Isla De Calo: First was the fact that since there was no U.S.-controlled port accessible from Cuba proper – only one small harbor open for shipping – most goods transported between Tampa Bay and Havana had to pass through Isla De Calo first! Second was American efforts to keep locals out of harm's way during their war effort: even though they had no military experience whatsoever they manned every gunboat and mortar battery within range while enemy warships lurked offshore waitingto ambush any merchant vessels trying to enter or leave Havana Harbor unobserved! Finally finally boats filled with rebel prisoners taken after Battle Of Manila Bay tried unsuccessfullytocrossRio Grande BridgeheadjustoutsideManila throughoutDecember25-261865werereturnedtoHavanaBaywithoutcompletionofthetransportationproject.(2) Later still another crossroads would develop when Marines landed at Guantanamo Bay on February 14th 1969 because President Lyndon Johnson needed troops stationed near Panama Canal Zone so that terrorist suspects apprehended inside America couldn't be released back into society until after their trial - something he knew would eventually lead to more conflict down south! A few years later charter airline Air Caribbean began service between Miami Beach and La Romareda Airport serving Punta Gorda going back up air conditioning seasonally starting January 1st 1986 followed thereafter by winter service beginning November 1st 1988 thru May 30th 1989 making it Florida’s only direct passenger airport outside Palm Beach County! By year 2000 there were over 400 Air Caribbean passengers traveling daily nonstop between Miami Beach International Airport and Punta Gorda serving both local residents visiting family or friends as well as tourists looking for some excitement not found anywhere else around these parts!
