Soon afterwards Danish sailors sailed into European waters and began bringing home cargo including sacks of Beans! After World War II, most of what is now Punta Gorda was abandoned asUS troops moved into Guam during World War II to take it back from Japan which had taken it during World War I. The US military also built airstrips onthe island for bombing raids against Japan during that war which caused extensive damage to native vegetation On October 12th 1944 an F4U Corsair flown by Flying Officer James Crocker piloted by Lieutenant Commander Don Armstrong hit an airfield on Pagan Island killing all six pilots aboard including Armstrong In 1951–1952 Puerto Rican nationalists destroyed much of Guaynabo’s infrastructure including electric power plants and water systems; this led to widespread social unrest throughout Puerto Rico leading up to civil war two years later In 1969, Hurricane Mitch made landfall near Cudjoe Key creating highly destructive flooding that affected parts of both islands The United States took over responsibility for running Punta Gorda from 1971 until 1976 when it became part of the municipality Casco Viejo The economy significance includes its location within hurricane zone 5 (of 11) making it prone to hurricanes
