Punta Gorda is a small island located in the Gulf of Mexico and it has been inhabited by humans for over 11,000 years. The first European to visit Punta Gorda was Christopher Columbus on November 14, 1492. He sighted the island while sailing through the stormy waters of what is now known as the Caribbean Sea. After landfall, Columbus named the island Isla de la Marianna after his mother. The first permanent Europeans to live on Punta Gorda were Spanish settlers who arrived in 1565. They built a small fortification called La Fortaleza at the southern tip of the island and began cultivating agriculture. In 1655, English colonists arrived on Punta Gorda from South Carolina and founded Plantation Key on the mainland side of the island. There they established a small town called Tortuga which served as their trading post for goods brought from Spain and Cuba. By 1811, all but one percent of Punta Gorda's population had fled to Florida because of disease outbreaks in Spain and Cuba. From 1821-1827, American loyalists fought against Mexican forces during what is known as The War for Cuban Independence which ended with Mexico winning control over most of Cuba including Punta Gorda Island
