Punta Gorda is a small island located in the Gulf of Mexico, about midway between Tampa, Florida and Key West, Florida. It was once part of the Spanish colony of Puerto Rico but became an American possession after the Treaty of Paris ended the Revolutionary War. The name "Punta Gorda" means "Island in the Bay." The first European to visit Punta Gorda was Juan de la Calzada on October 3, 1565. In 1793, Punta Gorda's Governor-General Don José de los Reyes y Comerciantes realigned it as part of the Province of Cuba. After independence from Spain in 1898, Puntagorda reverted back to its original status as an unincorporated territory within Cuba. The island has been inhabited by human beings since Paleo-Indian times and evidence suggests that Indian traders visited it during this time period. The first Europeans to arrive on Punta Gorda were Englishmen who landed there in 1608 under Captain John Smith. By 1614 they had renamed it Isla Margarita after Margarita del Castillo y Valdés, one of their number.
