The history of the Navy in Punta Gorda, Florida dates back to 1892. The first Naval Air Station was established on this site by Commodore James W. Moore, USN. In 1942, Punta Gorda was designated as the naval air station for the Finschhafen Islands. The Naval Air Station operated from 1941-1945 and during World War II various types of aircraft were used including bombers and fighters. In 1951, Punta Gorda became a base for the United States Navy Sixth Fleet when it was moved from Guantanamo Bay Cuba. The Sixth Fleet is responsible for protecting American interests in the Western Pacific region. From here, vessels operate to provide supplies and support to Allied forces throughout Operation Neptune’s Spear which constitutes the bulk of America’s military effort in that theater at that time. Since its inception, NAS Punta Gorda has been an important member of our local community with countless contributions made both during wartime and peacetime periods. A recent example is their role as host terminal for Clearwater Beach Shuttle System which provides shuttles service between Clearwater Beach and Jacksonville daily since 2002! NAS Punta Gorda continues its legacy of being an essential part of our community by providing much needed services such as weather permitting!

Punta Gorda, Florida is a small community located on the southeast coast of Florida. The population of Punta Gorda was 1,468 at the 2000 census. The economy of Punta Gorda is based primarily on agriculture and fishing. There are several stores and businesses in the town, as well as a few churches and museums. The first Europeans to visit Punta Gorda were Spanish traders in 1565. In 1795, Englishmen set up a trading post here while they were fighting against Spain in the War of Jenkins Earls. They soon abandoned this outpost, however, because of bad weather conditions. In 1821, Spain ceded Punta Gorda to United States pursuant to Treaty of Gadsden which ended the Mexican-American War. A US naval squadron blockaded Mexico's port at Vera Cruz until 1824 when war ended; after that US control over Punta Gorda improved significantly The first school opened in Punta Gorda in 1827 In 1865 an oil platform called "Alacrity" became operational off the coast near Punta Gorda; it would remain active for many years before being sold to an engineering firm in 1978 A lighthouse was built onshore just north of where Alacrity now stands in 1886 In 1904 an electric light company leased land from US Navy for shipping purposes off the coast near present day Boca Raton Bay The first store downtown opened here in 1907 As cotton production increased throughout most of America during World War II (1939-1945), large numbers of workers came ashore from ships to work on plantations near Key West and Fort Myers By 1945 almost all active plantations had been closed down or sold by 1946 due largely to pests such as boll weevil that had become common among these lands since Prohibition began

Punta Gorda, Florida, is a small town located on the island of Hispaniola in the state of Florida, United States. The community was founded by Spanish colonists in 1795 as a citrus settlement named La Vega de las Aves. The name was changed to Punta Gorda in 1821 to honor Commodore James Cook's visit to the area. The first European settler in Punta Gorda was José Félix de la Cruz y Valdés, who arrived in 1795 and built a plantation on what is now known as Cruz Bayou. In 1821, Commodore James Cook visited Punta Gorda and recommended that it be renamed Punta Gorda after him. The local people approved and the community flourished until 1895 when citrus production declined because of pests and diseases caused by West Nile Virus. In 1899, sugar cane plantations were established on the mainland; this led to an increase in population and commercialization of the town during its golden years. In 1922-23, Hurricane Charley destroyed most of the sugarcane plantations; this left Punta Gorda with only coconut palms for industry. However, new interests began to develop in 1978 when Michael Jordan purchased one of the coconut palm plantations from his father for $10 million dollars. This led to increased business activity throughout much of 1990s although some coastal development did take place such as Marconi Plaza which became a major tourist attraction due to its restored 1930s transmitter building and other attractions associated with that time period
