Punta Gorda, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Volusia County, Florida. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,890. It lies on the eastern coast of Tampa Bay and is bordered by Pinellas County to the south and east, Hillsborough County to the north and west, and Flagler County to the northwest. The area that would become Punta Gorda was originally inhabited by Mi’kmaq people who were hunters and gatherers. The first Europeans to visit what is now Punta Gorda were Spanish adventurers who landed there in 1565. They named it "San Salvador" after Saint Salvatorius of Compostela whose body they found on the beach. From this early days until 1821 when Englishman John Islip established a sugar plantation on what is now Holmes Beach Boulevard near modern-day downtown Punta Gorda, no permanent European residents lived in or near present-day Punta Gorda. In 1821 Islip replaced his small sugar plantation with a large one which he named "Pinellas." At first little land was available for plantations due to lack of moisture availability from nearby thunderstorm activity but as production increased so did demand for slaves from Africa who worked on Islip's plantations during those years. In 1828–29 Antonio López de Santa Anna (the governor of Cuba at the time) sent an expedition against Castro's Cuban rebels led by General James Wilkinson seeking revenge for Mexican losses at Buena Vista Creek four years earlier; however Castro had already taken over much of Cuba so Santa Ana's mission ended unsuccessfully rather than achieve any real results beyond delaying American war plans against Mexico. By 1830 American traders had developed shipping routes around Tampa Bay making it easier for them to import slaves into America while also threatening British traders living off Cape Canaveral Peninsula with war if they did not yield control over these routes; this changed when Commodore Stephen Decatur discovered clamshells containing phosphates off Jupiter's moon Io in 1837 while cruising through Tampa Bay looking for new sources of phosphate wealth;Decatur decided that Spain would be best able to supply phosphate needs since they possessed more reliable resources inside their country than did Britain which depended largely upon supplies from India. During World War II most people who lived on Punta Gorda came ashore for supplies orfor work at Camp Lejeune Naval Air Station on mainland North Carolina; however, few left when war ended without bringing any plants back with them
